Can the NRL stay alive? How do we make sure?

They survive with a millions of teams in Victoria;

Team Games Total Average
Collingwood Magpies 18 1,044,133 58,007
Carlton Blues 18 860,220 47,790
Essendon Bombers 18 837,904 46,550
Geelong Cats 18 787,627 43,757
Hawthorn Hawks 18 752,744 41,819
St Kilda Saints 18 714,149 39,675
Richmond Tigers 18 672,521 37,362
Melbourne Demons 17 627,540 36,914
Western Bulldogs 18 607,696 33,761
Fremantle Dockers 18 598,712 33,262

In fact, look at the top 10 (attendance) they're all within 60 minutes drive of the melbourne CBD except Dockers and Geelong. and most are better than the broncos average attendance.

Yes, fans of Sydney teams are clearly piss week. Again, shows that what's needed is a culture change - not moving teams around or drying them up.

In saying that, if they're dragging the code down because they can't afford to pay players... that's a different story - give them the flick!

LOLZ. And if Brisbane had 9 teams, they'd all be getting 30,000 crowds too right? [icon_lol1. [icon_lol1. [icon_lol1.

Seriously people, have an opinion but FFS, PUT IT IN PERSPECTIVE at least.

Did we just agree on something?

Sydney is an issue, absolutely without a doubt. But Sydney cannot be compared to QLD for crowds.

However, the crowds down there are terrible, and something needs to be done with the teams. I don't care if a certain area of Sydney doesn't have a team, that's the fans bad luck for not getting out and showing their support.

I wouldn't go as far to say Sydney is killing league, hell, I don't see league being dead and gone anytime soon, even with all the useless Sydney teams still there.

The NRL needs to expand into new territory though. Good start with the Gold Coast, but I still think it would have been better off placing a team somewhere new. Not in a twice failed region.

lol. jeremydt... Fremantle aren't a victorian side.

Let's not get into the QLD crowds Vs NSW Crowds debate because bar Brisbane, QLD are getting a flogging from Sydney in crowd numbers this year and this thread isn't a NSW Vs QLD Crowds thread so let's leave it at that. This is about the NRL as a whole.

As for this thread - I think it's a bit silly. The NRL have gone through so many troubled times and yet we are still growing.

A few facts:
- The average crowds the NRL have got in 2010 are the 2nd best EVER .
- We're kicking arse in TV ratings.

Those 2 factors indicate strongly that the game is healthy. If the interest in the game is healthy, the game will be healthy.[/quote:2qf3mbxj]

Certainly not attempting to start that debate again. I think it's been done to death.

But QLD doesn't have a solution to fixing the low crowds like NSW does. They could go back to the local grounds, instead of playing in super stadiums, or they can get rid of the teams who are financially struggling, by either injecting them millions upon millions to move them, or, just get rid of them.

In saying that. Again, I see absolutely no problems with the NRL in regard to the game going anywhere anytime in the future. There will always be support for the game.

Getting rid of the Titans in QLD of course I wouldn't have an issue with. I think any new business that has to be asking for cash this early into their franchise, should be setting off some very serious alarm bells for the NRL.

Also. Anyone comparing NRL to AFL is like comparing the amount of people who would rather eat an apple than an orange.

Agreed with Nashy. It's just stupid to compare sports.

Yeah as I said earlier, AFL has ALWAYS owned league when it comes to attendances etc. Always will. To compare them is ridiculous.

But League is a much better TV product, hence why it should be realistic to beat the AFL in terms of ratings AND TV dollars.

Is there anyway to get the TV ratings for both FTA or Foxtel? It would be interesting to compare the crowd figures to TV ratings for each team.

The NRL TV ratings are already significantly higher than the AFL's, which is the reason why the IC (when formed) has to negociate a proper TV deal. IMO, a clause should be put in the contract that if the ratings are still higher for the NRL at the time the AFL negociates their deal, the amount paid to each code continues to reflect the ratings.

A clause like that will never happen.

Here's a good way to keep NRL alive. Get rid of the Roosters. Stop pooing in places other than the toilet. [icon_shru

A visit to Melbourne and a visit to Sydney will explain it.
Melbourne is one of the great places.
To anyone who has never had a visit and a wander, do what the man in the hat says.
Melbourne has got stuff that Sydney doesn't get.
Generalisation for sure, but I am sticking to it.
The people there get it and they probably don't even think about it.
It's what happens.
