LUKE Lewis didn't imagine it would end like this.
He'll be seated alongside to the tunnel at Centrebet Stadium tomorrow afternoon, powerless to help Penrith avoid the wooden spoon thanks to an eight centimetre cut on his throat.
Instead of a match-winning performance, the scar will be the 208-game veteran's permanent reminder of his final appearance at the venue as a Penrith Panther. And yet still Lewis has no choice but to be eternally grateful.
In a tell-all interview with The Daily Telegraph, the Blacktown junior yesterday revealed a thyroid cancer scare has destroyed his chances of playing one last game for Penrith before next year's switch to Cronulla.
After receiving the dreaded diagnosis earlier this month Lewis kept the news closely guarded until his cancerous thyroid was removed last Monday and doctors gave him the all-clear to resume training.
The surgery was a success, meaning Lewis could immediately resume gym work with only hormone tablets to aid his recovery.

He was lucky he hurt his neck in July or they may not have found it.
