LUKE Lewis didn't imagine it would end like this.

He'll be seated alongside to the tunnel at Centrebet Stadium tomorrow afternoon, powerless to help Penrith avoid the wooden spoon thanks to an eight centimetre cut on his throat.

Instead of a match-winning performance, the scar will be the 208-game veteran's permanent reminder of his final appearance at the venue as a Penrith Panther. And yet still Lewis has no choice but to be eternally grateful.

In a tell-all interview with The Daily Telegraph, the Blacktown junior yesterday revealed a thyroid cancer scare has destroyed his chances of playing one last game for Penrith before next year's switch to Cronulla.

After receiving the dreaded diagnosis earlier this month Lewis kept the news closely guarded until his cancerous thyroid was removed last Monday and doctors gave him the all-clear to resume training.

The surgery was a success, meaning Lewis could immediately resume gym work with only hormone tablets to aid his recovery.

He was lucky he hurt his neck in July or they may not have found it.

EDIT

All the best to the Lewis family.

Really glad he is ok. Pretty disgusted in the way the media on twitter were carrying on about breaking big news about it though.

I read about it on the Dogs site, they said the Game Plan has breaking news.

Luke Lewis is on the Game Plan tonight.

Show has started.

Yeah the game plan and a few others involved in the show were acting all excited about breaking news that will rock the NRL. I mean FFS this is a guy with Cancer.

That neck injury really proved to be a blessing in disguise.

Happy it isn't serious, but still isn't pleasant news. Lewis is just one of those players that commands respect. Very tough & I wish him nothing but the best.

Media circus is a joke although I can relate a bit, Kaz has beaten me to the punch twice now.

The main thing is that he is going to be ok and will be able to keep playing footy. Still a shame he is leaving the Panthers. It just won't seem right seeing him play for the Sharks. A bit like when Petero left for Penrith.

Lewis is a tough guy, he'll recover strongly and comeback ten times the player he was before hand. Fact.

Reading the article, it seems all is not well at the Panthers.

Bill Harrigan will be on soon.

The media should be ashamed of themselves. They are facking vultures.

Lewis' departure reminds me of another Lewis and his famous departure from an incredible club.

Think it might bite the Panthers in the ass in the short term, but long term they'll be better off because everyone is on the same page.

Lewis' departure reminds me of another Lewis and his famous departure from an incredible club.

But the other Lewis thought the club revolved around him & thought he was untouchable.

On the Panthers, that rumour guy at the end of the show seemed to allude to Cleary going back to the Warriors. That would be hilarious and would make Gus look like a massive dick!

On Lewis, thats crazy hope it all works out.

Yeah saw it on the Game Plan. Quite surprising they found out about it by accident because of his neck injury.

Nothing exciting really, apparently Laurie had the job from the get go and they only interviewed Barrett and Fittler to make out that they were looking around.
