THE NRL's most dangerous new tackle, the kneecapper or cannonball, has been banned from this weekend onwards.
As foreshadowed by The Daily Telegraph last week, the NRL today unveiled a set of guidelines to rub out the tackle, in which a third player attacks the legs of a player already held by his teammates.

NRL Referees Coach Stuart Raper said the guidelines would have the support of players and fans.

About time, it should have been banned months ago.

I agree, I just hope there's not a similar misunderstanding or interpretation of the rule similar to the "tackling a player in the air". As long as it's just tackles that target the mid-lower legs of a player held already, fine. But if they start penalising people for tackling around the hips or thighs to get them on the ground, that's bullshit.

Good call by the NRL to finally outlaw this terrible tactic !!

I'm just glad Hoffman didn't get a serious injury from the Sandow tackle.

Still, I'd like to see Sam Thaiday cannonball Michael Ennis tonight.
