Clive Churchill Medal Retrospective

Re: Brisbane Broncos 2016 predictions

Nothing special?

He only beat three defenders to give the Cowboys one last golden opportunity to win the game.

Apart from that, his kicking game was a major point of difference between both sides and he was the most likely player for the Cowboys through out the second half, creating opportunities that others messed up.

That description seems more befitting a Michael Morgan who actually had a poor game outside of his glorious flick pass.

I can understand why the selectors went for him on that performance, however I couldn't have given it to him after his mistake in the lead up to the Gillett try. For that reason, I would have given it to Milford who tore the game open or Tamou who came up with some crucial plays in key moments.

Fair enough. Milford to me was clearly the best player on the field.

Every Clive Churchill Medal I've disagreed with

Mark Geyer should've won it in 1991 but it went to Brad Clyde

Glen Lazarus or Kevin Walters should've won it in 1993 but it went to Brad Mackay

Tonie Carroll should've won it in 1998 but it went to Gordon Tallis

Tawera Nikau should've won it in 1999 but it went to Brett Kimmorley

Luke Phillips should've won it in 2000 but it went to Darren Lockyer

Ben Kennedy should've won it 2001 but it went to Andrew Johns

Cooper Cronk should've won it 2009 but it went to Billy Slater

Jason Nightingale/Jamie Soward/ Dean Young should've won it in 2010 but it went to Darius Boyd

Sam Moa or James Maloney should've won it in 2013 but it went to DCE

Michael Morgan or Jake Granville should've won it last year but it went to Jonathan Thurston

Personally I can't really split Young, Nightingale or Soward in 2010 but there is no way in the world Boyd was the best in that game.
No disrespect Bman, but how many of those games were you alive for?

You should check out the Match Review thread, Socnorb. Bman's write up of classic games is awesome. He loves the game enough to buy old DVD sets and watch through old games.

Your argument was imports from New Zealand or England. Yet you list Mark Geyer and a list of Australian players.

Geyer did nothing until he got sin binned and then came back and played well- In fact the whole Penrith side was ordinary for the whole first half. Clyde was outstanding the whole game carrying the work load of Daley and Stuart who were busted beyond belief and on no legs.

You should count yourself lucky 1910. Nothing but full disclosure from Bman with a few bonus picks tossed in.

That's commitment.

I watched the 1998 Grand Final with a mate who is a big Broncos fan today. Interesting to think that the Bulldogs from 1998 were just like the dogs from 2 years ago. They scraped into the finals and overachieved beyond everyone's expectations, competed strongly for around 50 minutes before a stronger opponent steamrolled them at the end. Despite trailing 12-10 at halftime we went out and destroyed the Bulldogs after halftime winning 38-12.

Did Gorden Tallis deserve the Medal?

When everyone does their job and the margin is 26 points it becomes difficult to tell the main difference between the teams and difficult to pick a standout. Gordy got the medal after a strong performance in the second row. He didn't have a bad game but I thought Tonie Carroll was the pick of the bunch. He worked like crazy in defense coming up with some bellringers and catching the Bulldogs in their in goal, he scored a try just after halftime, some strong chargers thrown in with a couple of line breaks and setting up Darren Smith's 23rd try for 1998 makes him a winner for mine.
