Good point about them not losing as much field position as you'd think on short kick-offs. If the opposition is pressured more often than not to bat it back instead of go for a clean catch, you don't lose too much ground. And even if they do, they'll be tackled almost immediately with little or no momentum, so the defence will have ample time to set and be up on their toes.

Of course, if it is used as regularly in the NRL as it has been by the Jets, surely they'll come up with a way to implement blockers to give the receiving catcher a free take?

No, blockers are not useful at all. Say for example you use three on one side, fine so they kick to the other so you need three there too ! That's 6 blockers, a player or two to catch the ball, that's 10 of your team with a guy at fullback that's 11..... Just leaves you 2 to defend the rest of your half ! There is no effective defence against it and it means you get the ball at least 50% of the time instead of as the Walkers point out, virtually 0% of the time...unless of course it's Hunt receiving the ball !

Few teams tried to counter it by lining up 5 people along the 10 metre line not the normal 3.

The Jets had several different kicks they'd use; one was a rugby style kick off, they'd drill it at the poor guy standing on the 10 and either it would go into touch off them or Jets would get a rebound or they'd kick for Marmin running into a gap.

Teams knew it was happening, but you still need to stop it and a football drilled at you is hard to stop and the ball in the air is a lottery.

All of it takes a lot of practise.

Like 1910 said, you don't need your whole team there. It'll be more of a placement/strategic thing than just moar numbers.

It'd only be a matter of time before an effective counter is worked out. But it'd be fun to watch them try!

It'd be interesting to compare the figures of return for a rugby game where it is the done thing. How often do they get it back?

They obviously have counter measurements in place and know it will happen.

The point doesn't have to be do we get it enough the point is are we making a contest where before there wasn't- if you're doing that you're going to win the ball and you only have to win it twice a game and you have two sets you weren't going to have.

It can be viewed like bombing to the winger; do you score every time? No but we are going to a get a few drop outs and a few tries- they're not going to get it every time.

The Walker brothers might be lined up by a struggling NRL club so they might get a chance to see how they go in the Big League.

Wonder what club that would be if true, Wests Tigers? Gold Coast?

My guess is the Tigers.

Perhaps the Titan's could benefit from having coaching staff that is more interested in developing local talent and selected quality recruitment instead of taking on the under performing or past their used by date leftovers of other NRL clubs.

IPSWICH Jets co-coach Shane Walker has warned fans to expect the unexpected when his side takes on the Sea Eagles in their big trial game at Rat Park on Saturday.
The Queensland team has captured the imagination of the rugby league world with the innovative style of play introduced by Walker and his brother Ben who have trashed the conservative playbook.
It has been like a breath of fresh air and resulted in the Jets earning the nickname of the “Harlem Globetrotters of rugby league.”
“If fans are coming along to watch five hit ups before a kick or a series of block plays they will be at the wrong game- they can go to a Rabbitohs game for that,” Shane Walker told the Manly Daily.
He said their philosophy was a bit like that of football teams where they try to retain possession of the ball and keep it away from the opposition for as long as they can.

“Basically we try to keep the ball alive, make the defence work for multiple plays within each tackle.

“So rather than just doing a hit up where three guys make a tackle and slow you up we keep the ball alive and challenge right across the defensive line.
“We don’t want to have to sit there and bore out way through 80 minutes of footy.

Walker said all the Jets players train to be able to throw a spiral pass at least 10m, the majority of them can kick and a lot have a good offload.

“So in a game it is not really a risk,” Walker said.
Walker is realistic about the difference between the full NRL player from the Sea Eagles and his part-time Jets side.
“Naturally they are just bigger and stronger guys,” Walker said.
“As long as we can get a decent of possession we will certainly be able to give them a football game.
“Hopefully the Manly boys won’t handle our style too well.
“It’s going to be a real buzz for our guys.
Walker said the Jets players were looking forward to coming up against their former star hooker Matt Parcell who has joined the Sea Eagles this season.
The game kicks off at 6pm.

Love their style of footy. However they are really back at the beginning again with a depleted squad. Could be a long year for the Jets!
What are your thoughts 1910? Do they have the players to carry on with what they built last year?

at least Marmin will be back. Surely Carlin would still be with them?

I'm actually looking forward to seeing how the Jets go.

Obviously 2015 was a great year for them, but how much of that success was the players at their disposal and their suitability to the Walker's system?

If they can produce results under the same system with a vastly different roster, it certainly would present a compelling case for them to get a shot in first grade.

I think it has been exaggerated a lot. I am not going to predict a season with the same result that'd be stupid but I do think they will be there at the end.

Most of the 'new' players were already in the team.

Hayes will come from the bench to hooker, Winterfield and Neale are back so there is your replacements for Griffin and McConnachie. Conlon missed all of last year after an injury in round 3 he comes back, Lofipo missed all of last year he comes back in. Back line minus Cleeland will be the same as the Grand Final.

Any player is suited; if you have skills and you're super fit you can play footy for the Jets. They just let you use those skills and become really good at executing them.

Nearly the whole team were locals they didn't receive any special training they came from the IRL like Cleeland.

Not sure where to put this. Just hoping 1910 can give us some more insight into this guy.

HE is the 18-year-old rugby league rookie from Sudan who is preparing to take on the big name stars of the Manly Sea Eagles this Saturday.
Wing speedster Chol Chol will play for the Ipswich Jets in a trial against a strong Manly line-up at Pittwater Rugby Park in what will be only his third game of senior football.
“I am excited, but I am nervous as,” he told the Daily Telegraph. “It is dream come true playing against NRL players, I can’t believe it, that is where I want to be.”
He described the chance to show Steve Matai and his NRL teammates what he has got as the best thing ever.
“Getting tackled by them will be even bette r- if I’m not in hospital after,” he laughed.
Chol moved from the war-torn Sudan to New Zealand with his mother when he was six, becoming a border at Wesley College, the old school of Jonah Lomu.

It was then he was introduced to rugby league and rugby union for the first time and became was hooked.
“Watching Ben Barba and Shaun Johnson, they have been my idols ever since I was little. They made me want to play. I love it and want to dedicate myself to it,” he said.
Chol was spotted trialling for the Auckland under 17 rugby league team and received a scholarship to attend Ipswich High in 2015. He made an immediate impact when given a run in the Jets senior team this year, combining with raw talent with an infectious enthusiasm.

“He has only just finished school but he has scored and made the freakiest tries and breaks we have seen in only two trials,” said Jets co-coach Shane Walker.
“He is built like a twig but has got a sidestep that has to be seen to be believed and he has fend like a taser.”

And on Saturday Walker said to expect the unexpected from his side that are renowned for their unorthodox attacking style.
He said all the Jets players train to be able to throw a spiral pass at least 10m, the majority of them can kick and a lot have a good offload.

“We don’t want to have to sit there and bore our way through 80 minutes of footy.”
And that suits young Chol just fine.
“It’s entertaining and it’s just lots of fun to play,” he said.
