Contracts up for grabs

I don't see why this is taking so long. It should have been sorted months ago. The players who are most important for the game routinely sign contracts for 2-3 years, some times more, but right now no one can negotiate beyond next season without taking a very dangerous stab in the dark.

It comes back to that question: Is the NRL that incompetent or are there agendas here? Do the powerbrokers want a mass shuffling of the decks? Are they deliberately stalling so that literally half the games' players become free agents and teams can build from scratch like a fresh year of Fantasy Football? I think of some of the more powerful Sydney teams, like the Roosters and the Bulldogs, is it in their interests to have mass talent there for the signing, or would they be better off with their current rosters locked in?

[h=1]Broncos face uphill battle to keep all off-contract stars[/h]
THE Brisbane Broncos may have to lose Josh Maguire in order to keep Anthony Milford as the boom playmaker is poised to become rugby league’s first $1.5 million player.

With the player market for 2018 and beyond now officially open, Courier-Mail chief league writer Peter Badel has told this week’s edition of the Colman’s Call podcast that the Broncos will struggle to keep all their off-contract stars.

As well as Milford and Maguire, halfback Ben Hunt and Kiwi international Adam Blair became open to offers on November 1.
Badel said Milford’s asking price holds the key to which players the club can hold.
“I think he’ll be rugby league’s first $1.5 million player,” he said. “I know we’ve had million dollar players but I think this contract will be the biggest we’ve seen in the NRL. He’s not overly loyal to the Broncos; he’s only played a couple of seasons so there will be 15 clubs wanting to sign him. “

Badel said the Broncos had been able to pay under the market value for players in the past because of attractive lifestyle and cost of living factors, but with the salary cap set to rise money will talk loudest.
“Josh Maguire stayed for $450,000 in his last contract,” he said. “He was offered $700,000 from Sydney clubs but he chose to stay loyal because he likes Brisbane and he has family here. It’s a more cutthroat age now, he’s aged 25, 26, this is the biggest contract of his career.

“He won’t be taking pay cuts again so the Broncos have to up the ante and whether they can afford to keep them all will be interesting. Anthony Milford will be critical to all this.”

Bloody hell. Which idiot club offered McGuire 700k?

Badel is talking out of his anoos as usual. He may write for the Courier Mail but he is a dyed in the wool New South Welshman who takes any opportunity he gets to take pot shots at the Broncs and Bennett in particular.

He is also a liar and a master of the 'things change bro' routine whenever his BS is found out and refuses to even look at his own contradictory articles when he is pulled on about his rubbish.

Nothing but speculative dribble...

Firstly no one knows how hard the battle will be to keep our players since no one knows what the salary cap will be.

Secondly, while Milford may not be overly loyal to us, he us extremely close to and loyal to his family, who happen to live in Brisbane. It would take a mammoth offer to lure him away IMO.

And finally, players were already open to offers long before today, any contracts they signed just wouldn't be registered by the NRL

Agree with both of you, just thought I would chuck it up and see what people thought.

Badel lost me after the trashy women's mag gossip column crap he wrote about Bennett.
The one thing no one else can offer Milf, or anyone else for that matter, is a life post football in Brisbane.
Im sure a long career at the club after retirement beckons if he stays.

People seem confused by this, but thats not right.... Players and agents can't enter into discussion or negotiation with rival clubs until November 1 on the preceding year that their contract expires. So players off contract end of 2017 are now able to negotiate with other clubs. Their current club can deal with them any time during their contract. November 1 doesn't have any thing to do with registration dates, contracts will be registered any time once the ten day cooling off period has passed. November 1 is basically the start of the next season, most clubs return to work preparing for next year on Nov 1, so negotiations for the following season (2018) can take place during 2017, but not before, unless player and club agrees.

Hopefully the article is just speculative bs, but I think we should be looking at outside backs before thinning the forwards. Especially up front, we can't afford to lose the drive and experience of someone like moose, that would be madness.

Must be a slow week for news stories.........$1.5 Mil is a lot of cash for a young player who still has to plenty of work to do on his game, such as ball security and slowness in the play the ball for starters.

Sorry mate, but it is you that is confused. the following come directly from the NRL website:

There is no rule to prevent clubs talking to players at any time. There is an acceptance that nobody likes to see players negotiating with a new team but there is also the reality that players in the game do change clubs and that those discussions can take place over an extended period.

Rather than introduce ‘discussion deadlines’ that have in the past been shown to be ineffective, the NRL reserves the right not to register the contract and that ensures that the player’s existing club has a fair chance of retaining its player if it wants to.

Right there in black and white..

Clubs and players just usually don't bother because I imagine it would be too much of a distraction..

But yeah, the NRL, the RLPA both have confirmed that rule does not exist. It never did.

That's a pretty rubbish article really... interviewing a journo then claiming his opinion as fact.

Only truth in that article is the claim Brisbane will struggle to keep all off contract players and that's because of the joke that is the NRL and their inability to sort out the cap. Can't believe the players association isn't more vocal about it

Wrong. There is no rule preventing negotiations before 1 November, none whatsoever!

The NRL will not register a new contract for a player, more than 1 year away. It's really that simple.

So to clarify, you can negotiate whenever. But the NRL won't register it with any more than one year to run on their current contract.
