Try-scoring ace Corey Oates has re-signed with the NRMA Insurance Brisbane Broncos.
The 24-year-old Maroons finisher has inked a one-year contract extension, and spoken about how he wants to stay at the club long-term.
"The best thing to do was to get the one-year deal sorted – I don't want to go anywhere else," said Oates, who has scored 78 tries in 120 games for the Broncos.
"I did a one-year deal last season to prove that I deserve a bigger contract, not money-wise, but because I want to stay here for a long time and do whatever I can for this club.

"There's been a lot going on in the back end of the season behind the scenes – and the best option was to clear my head, sign the one-year deal and back myself once again."
Oates had a strong 2018, crossing 18 times in 23 games and collecting the Broncos' Best Back award for his tireless work on the wing, as well as being voted XXXX Fan Player Of The Year.

Badel really is an idiot ... Oates hasn't sacrificed $1.5 million to stay with us at all ... he sacrificed 200k at most (if the quoted contract is accurate)

I think by the the end of 2020 that anyone that was considering on following Wayne may have changed their mind.

hopefully they have changed their mind before the end of 2019

I guess that just leaves TPJ...

I reckon if they are going to follow it's now.
Wayne's only got 2019 and 20 left, why follow him for 1 season? Especially if Seibold does well this season...

I am assuming that 2019 gets added to the 2020/21 deal. I don’t think 2019 replaces 2021.

that would be my assumption as well ... a bit like how Seibolds deal with us is now 5 years instead of the original 4

I was hoping the montage ready for the news, but unfortunately it's not.

Well, it actually could have been but I got fucking lazy.

Is it likely that Corey was waiting for Wayne to leave before re-signing?

Probably.

His new manager said over a month ago that a deal had been made and he would sign within a fortnight and then we hear nothing for over a month and then 48 hours after Wayne is sacked he suddenly re-signs.

Doubtful IMO

Probably.

or the club held off an official announcement about his retention, to temper the potential sacking of Bennett with some good news about the re-signing of a fan favourite

Its been on the cards for weeks tbf, i think this is just a coincidence although i must admit despite being told otherwise i did have this feeling he may be on his way.

The 24-year-old was keen to sign a multi-year deal immediately, but salary-cap pressures forced the Broncos to broker an abbreviated term

This is what I found a little concerning, certainly hope it’s a case of

A/ we’re not prepared to pay a winger more than 500k on the books with 3rd parties to be added

B/ we’ve got money but we’re using our funds to retain the likes of TPJ etc
