Dally M Awards

I have no such issues with him getting the Dally M award since that is just for on field performance, but the Provan Summons award?! How short people's memories must be. A year or so ago, everyone hated him and thought he was a giant tool. Fair enough if he'd turned his life around completely and people can respect that, but he hasn't exactly kept his nose clean this year.

I have a problem with it. I don't care if it's for on field performance, if it's our highest prestige award, then it should go to someone who's the best on and off the field. Best and fairest.

I think he "did his time" for all that rubbish. I don't know if he was a better player than Lockyer at 5/8 but it would be a bit weird giving the player of the year to someone without giving him his corresponding positional award too.

Exactly. It's like the pathetic arguments at the time that Willie Mason won the Clive Churchill saying he shouldn't have won that due to his alleged involvement in the Coffs Harbour scandal among other indiscretions. He won it fair and square. It's not his fault the system for awarding the winner of this is inherently flawed - being reminded of Gary Freeman winning in 1992 over what was far and away Allan Langer's best year of his career is evidence enough of that.

Anyone claiming that locky deserved the five-eighth award over carney obviously didnt watch many roosters games this year. locky played well, but carney dominated several games, all on his own. locky didnt really do that

very surprised myles didnt picked up any awards, or even get nominated. i guess all his unnoticed hard work really does go unnoticed.

sammy and gillet both deserved their awards and congrats to the both of them. funny tho how when asked who the best 2nd rower he played against is, thaiday replied with "gallen, actually im surprised he didnt win this". guess thats hard to win when you're a lock and not a 2nd rower ay sammy lol.

slater fully deserved the rep player of the year award too, as he played great in all 3 origin matches. shillington wouldve been a close second imo, followed by myles, locky then JT.

I tend to agree and as I said I can't argue with him getting the Dally M when it is purely on field performance based, but I just find it amusing how fickle some people are is all when someone people hated only a short time ago wins most popular player!

He didn't win most popular, he won best player all year award.

And he deserved it.

Provan Summons: Todd Carney <<<<<-------- Public's prize, ergo most popular!

It has happened before when the Dally M winner didn't get his positional award. Don't ask me to specify (cause I can't be bothered looking it up), but I do have recollections of a few years going "WTF??!! He wasn't even the best player in his position, how can he be best overall?"

the provan-summons medal is the fans choice for best player of the season, not 'most popular'. even if you hate him you cant deny he was the best player over the whole year.

sure popularity would play a part in it, but there are people that can vote without just choosing their favourite player.

Dude Nathan Hindmarsh won this award about 3 years running not that long ago when his best football was long behind him...it's a popularity contest plain and simple

i realise that - but really, do you think everyone loves carney? i certainly dont think they do.

i think people have just seen how well hes played, and done so without the ego that other players, ie hayne, have.

AP I think you overestimate the intelligence of the people who could be bothered voting for that award.

wasnt carney carving up from fullback at the start of the season?

and didnt boyds form drop off considerably after the origin series?

so does anyone here have a better suggestion for player of the year then, keeping in mind that u have to pick someone that was more consistent than carney? and no, dont say lockyer

when i look back on the year, carney is a stand out for most entertaining and is also probably the first that comes to mind when i think of who dominated the most matches. farah had a few good games, but he also had his fair share of shockers. locky only had 1 or 2 dominating performances (and i mean head and shoulders above everyone else in the game). i cant argue with the choice. the way i see it, the award isnt the "most consistent", its the best player. carney was that imo. this also applies to best 6 of the year

TBH I thought he was horrible for the first half, probably cost the Roosters a few games. I think the only award that carries any credence is the RLPA POTY

I think people love a good news story, especially one that is front of mind in the press.

Thinking about it I don't reckon that in Carney's case, awarding the Dally M for best overall player but not awarding him the positional award would have been a bad thing. Everyone knows he spent half a season at fullback, but Boyd has the fullback award sewn up. Ditto the 5/8 where presumably Lockyer or Soward polled more points over the course of the season. But if you combined Carney's points in any position, he's the winner overall.
