Hey guys,

i wonder with all this talk about his knee if he will be fit to play for qld on wednesday. this begs the question whether this is all mind games or his knee is actually still giving him trouble. If his knee is still giving him trouble this is a real worrying sign for the broncos espically as there doesnt seem to be any cure to it even after he had his latest bout of surgery.

What do you guys think. Are QLD playing mind games or is the champion 5/8 going to have to pull the plug due to this constant knee injury?

One of the guys from RLeague who actually attends training sessions has confirmed that he has failed to run these last few days and that his knee was still causing him trouble. He probably won't play if this continues in the next day or so.

There is a cure and its rest. Lockyer has tried to come back 3 times and on eveey occassion he's pulled up sore. Clearly he's kidding himself that he's fit to play, i understand that he wants to be back 4 QLD but i really think it isnt worth it for one game. I hope he plays but i hope his knee is right and if he doesnt play so he can get his knee right then i wont be complaining!!

Locky needs to decide what's more important - Origin (wank - but fun) or the NRL Premiership: the pinnacle.

I hope he pulls out of the wank and concentrates on bringing the GF trophy home, where it belongs.

Locky been ruled out of Origin 2 so IMO thats great news

Indeed - and I hope he doesn't return until his knee can stand up to 80 minutes of football, however long that takes.

The last thing I want to see is some kind of permanent damage to the best player in the world.

the question is though why is he having so much trouble? is it because of his age? i mean brent tate got the same thing done last year and he doesnt seem to have had any after affects. i think it might have to do with all those km's over the years on the legs.

It definitely does have something to do with his age. It's harder to recover from injuries when you are older.

Also, I don't remember what Tate's injury was....maybe it wasn't as bad? Plus he got injured a couple of weeks before Lockyer.

Nick Malceski came back from an ACL injury in a couple of months and is now playing awesome footy for the Swannies!

Granted it was new revolutionary surgery but he is playing the house down. So 7 months is quite a long time in that context.

But yes it is usually an 8-9 month rehab for the injury.

You can't compare them! Lockyer had the traditional ACL graft, not the artificial one. For your average person, it's usually a 12 month recovery to get back to sport.

7 months is crazy short.

Exactly, revolutionary surgery AND the fact that he's lucky too.

9 months is the recommended, and still then you can have troubles if you don't manage it properly.

Is there really a new revolutionary surgery? or are you being sarcastic?

AFL CLUBS are wary of the new-age knee surgery conducted on Sydney's Nick Malceski, but say they will monitor his recovery and use it as a medical test-case.

Collingwood youngster Brad Dick yesterday had conventional surgery on his ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, just days after Adelaide's Rhett Biglands had the same procedure.

But while many clubs are openly sceptical of the newest form of synthetic ligament, Pies surgeon Julian Feller said he could see other clubs embracing the method.

He said if Malceski made a successful recovery this year, players might follow his lead under certain circumstances.

Malceski had a particular (and reasonabley rare) ACL rupture, the surgery can't be used in all circumstances

It can't be used in all cases, but it's indicated as suitable for MOST acute injuries (ie, where the ACL ruptures during a specific movement - a la Lockyer and most footballers). So it COULD have worked for Lockyer.

However, there's still scepticism about the strength and durability of the artificial grafts. And few Australian surgeons are proficient with it. Whereas in Europe, there's a host of orthopedic surgeons doing it. American athletes often go there to get their knees done for that reason.

Just read one story of an NFL player who ruptured theirs early in the season, went to Europe, got it fixed, and played the last 10 weeks of the season.

The Malceski case is a very interesting one. If it lasts (and by that, I mean to the end of his career) in the sport that produces more ACL injuries than any other in this country, then that's a strong case for the procedure.

I wouldn't, he needs to get back on the park asap.. this competition is really tight, and if we drop to many games we could miss the 8. Hodges is out for a while, I'm not all that confident in us winning to many games without Locky.

It's really simple, he just needs to take it week by week and when he feels ready to give it another go he will. Hopefully that will only been a few weeks

We can win without Lockyer, we've proved that already. We're not in danger of missing the 8, we just need to get back on the field and do what we do best.

With Stagg in the halves and Perry in the team. Yeah, right.

Saw an interview with Locky last night where he actually admitted that he tried to come back too early twice to make big games - Test and Origin. At least he finally realises he rushed back and maybe now he will finally be sensible about it.

Who was our 5/8th in the early rounds when Lockyer was injured? We won quite a few games then....
