THE BOSS Dave Donaghy - Broncos CEO

360 completely missed Donaghy's point and only covered half the story, they went with the narrative that he is complaining about other clubs poaching our players, which is only half of what he said. **** that show is wank
They took a negative angle on something to do with the broncos? Surprise, surprise! 🙄 Donaghy was widely regarded as one of the best ceos in the competition, regularly lauded by even the Sydney media, he’s been at Brisbane for a couple of days and they are already gunning for him. It’s all very predictable.

I also notice **** picked up on the Broncos wanted Walker to be a fullback, which is why he signed with the Roosters ... i do find that strange as the real story would have been a much better card to play against us

Billy’s got a short memory.

It’s not about Fifita or Staggs or Coates, they are fair game. It’s about kids like Walsh & Piakura who have had the broncos invest time, money & resources into them for years and the moment they are ready to play senior football a club comes in over the top and offers million dollar contracts to poach them. Leaving the broncos with the choice of keeping them, paying on potential and getting their cap into a mess or reluctantly letting them go. Brisbane don’t see any reward for their investment. The NRL don’t want to know about it, they will continue to bury their head in the sand hoping there will always be clubs willing to do it. What happens if Brisbane are privatised and the new owner decides they would rather keep their million dollars each year? That is how myopic the NRL are about the whole thing.

I won't cop donaghys rant today about poaching and development. The broncos hierarchy have done it for years to other clubs. It's only an issue now because it happening in reverse.
He needs to focus more on the boneheads steering the recruitment and retention internally than externally.
Interesting comments from gould tonight about an issue I raised a week or so ago, players being poached by rival managers at the club. Everyone knows what has happened and is still happening. Donaghy needs to get this fixed asap before he worries about any other issue..

just so frustrating isn't it

Let's have a look at the current roster.
Lodge and Turpin were buy ins, haas was not a Brisbane junior. Riki is a kiwi, pangai was bought from Canberra, gamble was a local phin who was overlooked and only came in late after a small stint at the tigers, Milford was bought in, isaako was a shark, Coates was from the Tweed, staggs was from nsw, Farnsworth is a pommy, Arthur's is from the storm, dearden was Mackay then Tweed and the list goes on. There isn't many home grown brisbane kids in this team who have come through. That tells me a whole different issue..

I like how the NRL 360 idiots all missed the point DD was making about development. If they want to make an 18 team comp we need better players in the comp and to do that teams need to develop them. Why develop them when we definitely can’t keep all of them because of the way the salary cap is and then other teams take them. If a player has been with you since 15/16 then they should be 20% discount off the cap for first 5 years and 25% off after that. Do that and then everyone will be throwing money at grass roots and the game will improve. Simple.

I know this has been reviewed before however let's really dig in here for who was here and gone or overlooked all together, the biggest was Munster.. I have said before he came down for 3 days and bailed after no one spoke to him or gave him the time of day, lyndsay Collins was chopped after an injury. Val Holmes was overlooked coming through even though he was from townsville, Moe fotuaika is from Logan and wasn't liked, then there is the glaring error of Walsh and walker, Harry Grant was a Yeppoon kid which is bronco territory. They didn't rate tino and said he can go. Jack howarth who hasn't played nrl yet, who is a absolute freak is another rocky boy. Ponga was here and bailed, Frank molo wasn't wanted and he has now proven a very handy bench player, reed mahoney is from Nambour. There are plenty more on the list however let's start with the issues of the above first. Someone is clearly In charge of this mess and have been for 5 to 10 years now and this is the end result.
Cory paix was elite as junior 7 however he got pigeon holed as a 9 and he hasn't developed. Sounds similar to the walker pigeon hole of a fullback.

It would very hard to tell exactly how good someone is going to be at the age of 16-17, you might know they are a good prospect but you don't actually know if they'll handle first grade, at some point you've got to take a risk as there's no way we can keep all the kids who went on to have great careers at other clubs

Tyson Gamble for example, this isn't some boom rookie who was unwanted, it just takes time to see the best of them sometimes but for others they come in and look like an elite player in their first year, we've just made the wrong choices and lots of them. You'd like to think in the near future we will start making the right decisions regarding our young kids

I love how we are just ignoring the village idiot 🤣

Sorry mate you have missed the point, all you have shown is that the Broncos are not the only team scouting and signing players in QLD or Brisbane for that matter. Conveniently 360 approached the subject disingenuously also. What DD and club are talking about is not every kid that plays in a area should be theirs, what he is talking about is clubs poaching players that have been signed and developed, Broncos money gets sunk into these players, they get high grade training and access to facilities ect. Some clubs will just not bother looking further then who is signed and being developed by the Broncos system and when they are 18 and coming off contract. That is not scouting it is poaching, Walsh was offered money the Broncs just couldn't give him, how much money have they put into the last 5 years of his development and it just walks out the door. If players want to leave they should be allowed to do so, but there should be something like a salary exemption for say 20% that allows the club that developed them to at least field a competitive or comparative offer for at least 2 -3 years of their first full time contract.

So who's in charge of our talent scouts and who are our 'academy' people? How are they being performance managed? The fact you could list an Origin-standard 13 (at least) of players from our areas that at best played 20s or had a 'contract' while in high school should speak volumes.

I know I harp on about it and I know in practice it's not as straightforward as it is in theory, but why are we not funneling money into any combination of Colts/MM/ISC sides? It just streamlines things and gets players playing together earlier. Kids gets a contract and they think 'oh wow I'm already in the system playing for them in Colts.'

Maybe I'm romanticising it a bit, but I'm almost certain if you had any of the players mentioned by Talanoa in a Broncos jersey from 16yo there's a fair to good chance they still would be. Of course you'd need to make sure the people running this show were actually competent, but yeah.

Im not sure how it operates in QLD but in NSW they seem to operate a system more in line with your suggestion.

I know when i went through reps at parra we played u/16s, u/18s and u/20s for the parra eels and played against the panthers, tigers, magpies, rabbits etc.

You can see it leads to results. Case in point, look at the panthers kids, many of them have been playing together since they were 16 and develop combinations in first grade much quicker.

I don't know shit about him but I do like that in his first conference he's come out labelling teams like the Titans as vultures because that is exactly what they are and we all seen on Friday night they can buy as many million dollar Broncos as they like, they don't have any sort of culture

I'm not sure I agree with that mate, let's take Jack bird and Milford as an example. Milford was a raider since 13 and they pumped a heap of cash and time into him and then he gets poached by red hill, Jack bird was a dragons junior his whole life and the sharks were first then the broncos came in to poach 2nd. We poached haas from the titans also remember.
The Walsh situation isn't poaching in my opinion, it's identifying talent that clearly someone or some people in out system haven't. They didn't play him at nrl level even though he was killing them at training last year.
They even played tesi niu, Kennar Arthur's and others in front of him. That shows and says a lot.
I would bet my left nut if he had played he wouldn't have left to go to the warriors. Walsh was also another kid from the Gold Coast and played for the gulls down there.
My argument is, who is making these monumental decisions which are clearly disasters...

just let us have 5 minutes of joy at a Broncos official finally calling out the NRL 😎

Have to agree with everything you've said. We're not the only ones that lose promising kids and we poach just as well as others. Donaghy's biggest challenge is to identify the best of them and how we keep them. We have fucking sucked at this over a long period of time.
