[h=1]NRL CEO job: John Grant leaves game confused in wake of Dave Smith’s resignation[/h]ARLC chairman John Grant has been forced into an embarrassing and confusing explanation of his duties in the wake of Dave Smith’s resignation, denying he will be given the *responsibilities of running the NRL as interim chief executive.
The man who gave us the Manly Seagulls, Cronulla Hawks and inanely suggested Alex McKinnon had lost the support of the rugby league community delivered another fan-confusing statement on Wednesday.
Amid major concerns among club heavyweights over the code’s corporate governance, Grant bizarrely claimed he was not the interim CEO.
At least one leading chairman said it was “hypocritical” and a “very bad look ... a joke’’ for Grant to take on the interim CEO position, providing good reason as to why the polarising Queenslander was quick to distance himself from the title when contacted by The Daily Telegraph.
Grant’s eagerness to back-pedal from the interim CEO role coincides with a clause in the ARL commission constitution which states in part: “The chief executive officer is not a director and not a member of the board.
“At any time while the chief executive officer remains in office he or she may not be appointed as a director.”
Legal opinion suggests this clause would also apply to any person taking up the role of *interim CEO.
During a series of questions put to Grant by The Daily Telegraph, he was asked how he sought the ARL Commission’s approval to become the interim CEO?
He replied: “I will not be acting as interim CEO.
John Grant’s infamous media debut had fans laughing and crying.“They (commission) determined that rather than disrupting the operations of the organisation by appointing an interim CEO from the executive team, I be asked to take on additional duties to those I have as chair of the commission in this period.
“They approached me and I accepted their rationale and agreed to do so. As such, I will not be taking on a role of interim CEO. My role remains chairman.’’
The response was vastly different to the explanation provided by the code’s very own digital platform, NRL.com, which in announcing Smith’s resignation on Tuesday declared Grant had been appointed the interim CEO.
“Smith announced on Tuesday morning that his three-year tenure as NRL CEO would come to an end on November 30 at which point Australian Rugby League Commission chairman John Grant would step in in an interim capacity until a successor is appointed,’’ NRL.com reported.
It is yet to be determined by the ARL commission if Grant will receive an additional salary on top of his director’s fee, estimated to be $100,000 a year, for taking on increased responsibilities.
It was also during Smith’s resignation press conference on Tuesday that Grant stated he would fill the void of the departing CEO in an “interim” capacity.
“In the interim, as chair I will take an executive responsibility as leader of the organisation and the senior leadership team will report through me to the commission,’’ Grant said.
The NRL also went as far as supplying media with a press release in an attempt to also clarify Grant’s duties once Smith finishes in his post on November 30.
“There will be no interim CEO, but after that date (November 30) I will take on some additional duties,’’ Grant said.
The explanation is unlikely to appease disgruntled chairmen who want answers from Grant as to why he is best suited to lead the code during the recruitment process of a new CEO.
“Who is going to oversee him, where is the governance?’’ a leading chairman said.
“It has been thrown out the window. Why wouldn’t the commission put in (Todd) Greenberg as an interim CEO?”
“It is hypocritical in the extreme that Grant takes on the job, and a very bad look.
“We have some serious issues with Grant about club funding and the new funding model, let alone developments of the last day or two. The leadership of the NRL is paralysed. It’s a joke.”
You know what else pisses me off about this AFL deal comparison? No one has bothered to break it down as a comparison. The AFL deal is for a longer term, for more games, with the duration of each game being considerably longer. Break it down, and on a per-minute of broadcast basis, it's not as disparate as the media would have you believe.
looks like Smith was C9 sleeper. He locked out all streaming companies, and all FTA apart from 9, including Murdoch. The only dark thing about that git ****ing off is the other git in the commission trying to remember what the hell he's doing on Earth.

Do you have any links or sources about all streaming companies being locked out? I haven't seen anything in regards to that and it sounds pretty interesting.

It is being reported that John Grant played a big part in excluding pay tv providers from negotiations... Yet all the blame is falling onto Smith.
Rothfield thinks Raylene Castle should get the job ...
