Who else watched the interview with Taylor on the footy show?

Very interesting to see is response when asked where his skills came from all of a sudden. his response was that Wayne Bennett just wanted him to be a battering ram up the middle and wouldnt let him use his natural skills and talents. I, for one, am glad he left the broncos to go to a place and a coach that has let him be the best player he can be.

He is a real talent, and should be coached accordingly

Meanwhile, there are wingers who say they would happily play prop if that was what they were told to do, and vice versa.

Maybe he wasn't played in his best position but, when you're a teenager trying to break into a first grade squad, you shut up and do what you're told with all the effort you can muster.

You only need to look at players like Berrigan, Gillett and Glenn to see that point. if playing first grade means playing a different position or style then normal so be it. Take that chance and run with it

The game is morphing anyway .... just look at the amount of backrowers that can play center/wing at the moment.

It's only a matter of time before we have wingers that can pack in at prop in a pinch.

Versatility is the key

The way forwards are required to play these days has really evolved.

They need to have decent footwork, the ability to pass, run at gaps, etc. Back in the olden days, all you had to do was get the ball and run straight!

This is obviously a bait but Taylor was a front rower all throughout his junior days and came to the club as a front rower. If you watched him play any lower grade football at all you would know that he is a front rower come second rower.

I think Bennett wanted Taylor to be good at the basics before unleashing his skills out wide, I love big Dave he is awesome I am glad he is playing well. He has attitude problems there is no doubt about it.

Taylor said that even when he was at the Broncos.

so what if hes a front rower? if youve got a front rower who can offload, do chip kicks, throw cutouts, do awesome fends, do you just say 'no youre not allowed to do that, you are going to run straight up the middle and play the ball'? no, you would let them work those talents into his game. people had HUGE wraps on his kicking/offloading/stepping abilities well before he came into first grade, did they not? so since you supposedly watched him back then, wouldnt you have seen these talents too? if you could see them, then lord knows anyone else with half a brain could too - bennett included.

but he chose to just use him as a battering ram, further showing that Bennett was out of touch with how the modern game is played. he saw a big guy and just got him to run straight at the defence. you know, just like how he got Sam Thaiday to do for all those years, but then as soon as he gets a different gameplan from a different coach he becomes the best prop in the game.

sugar coat it all you want, the fact is that Wayne Bennett stifled his game and basically forced him to leave. the same way he stifled Thaidays game with his outdated gameplan and tactics.

But Henjack was coach when he decided to leave?

DT has got all the skills but it's a bit different showing them off in schoolboy footy where you have a 20 or 30kg advantage on almost every other kid plus your team (St Brendan's Yeppoon in Dave's case) wins every game by about 40 points. I have no doubt WB played him differently than he would have liked to and was used to but we have all seen plenty of blokes with "all the skills" come and go in the NRL.

Actually DT played a fair bit more centre than front row at school.

Maybe in maybe grades 8-10, but I saw him play year's 11 and 12 in the front row for St Brendon's.

Which DT are you talking about? He was always front row from 13s onwards. In grade 11 he played 2nd row for SBC but that is because they had a monster pack with 3-4 blokes topping 100kg.

WB always gets his young forwards to get the basics right first, that's his coaching style and it works. If anyone can remember, it wasn't Taylors attack which had him out of favour it was his work off the ball around the rucks and a bit of attitude toward training.
He has obviously matured as a player which was bound to happen but sometimes a player needs the change before that can happen.

I agree with Dexter, and he obviously had fitness issues (re the attitude to training comment) which he was asked to address and could not seem to. If anything you are seeing the benefit of him (a) getting a bit more fitness, and (b) maturing a little.

Playing him out of position isnt getting the basics right first, its stifling his ability. You dont make a centre debut in the front row and play there until he gets that right before moving him to his real position, so why do it with a wide running, ball playing 2nd rower. Bennett did A LOT of things right in his time, but just admit, he got this one wrong
