he AFL might be on track to sign another big name rugby league star with Essendon holding talks with Melbourne Storm giant Greg Inglis.

The Nine Network has reported the Bombers met with Inglis in Sydney on Friday night with a view to signing the 23-year-old.

The meeting comes just days after Inglis' former Storm teammate Israel Folau signed with new AFL franchise GWS and former Brisbane Broncos star Karmichael Hunt had his first training session with Gold Coast.

When is Gallop going to look at fixing what is quickly become a real problem? To me it looks like the NRL are prepared to kill the sport in an attempt to keep Sydney clubs afloat.

It is ok he plays for QLD...

If this keeps up we will only have enough first graders left for 10 clubs.

Cronulla may finally win a premiership.

Qld will lose so many backs Steve Michaels will get a rep jumper.

Gallop should have been sacked a long time ago, he is an incompetent leader.
His massive underselling of the games TV rights has set the game back 10 years.

His lack of balls to cancel the licence of incompetent shitty Sydney clubs holding the game back and should have been pushing memberships a very long time ago, they've only really started this year.

The game needs a real businessman to run it, not a lawyer.

Nothing will come of this.
The reason GWS and GC have been allowed to sign RL players on huge salaries is because of the marketing value. They hope that Hunt will attract Qlders and Folau will attract the Polynesians in Western Sydney.
Who is Inglis going to attract to an established team in the heart of a city that doesn't even know who he is?
The AFL won't be able to justify letting a Melbourne based club sign Inglis for huge dollars. It won't bring any new fans to Essendon, and furthermore it will just set a precedent for all the other clubs.
Carlton to AFL - "We want to sign this top Gaelic player from Ireland, but he wants $1 million a year. What? We can't? Well, you let Essendon sign Greg Inglis, and you footed the bill."
Richmond to AFL - "We want to sign etc, but he wants etc. You let Essendon sign Greg Inglis..."

I hope you're right but the AFL could allow this purely to fk the nrl over.

Inglis has been linked to Essendon every year for the past 3 seasons. Essendon also have no real stars and would IMO have some money to throw at Inglis if this is serious.

They'd be screwing themselves over more for the reason I mentioned.
Inglis wouldn't sign for anything less than a fortune. Essendon would need the AFL to approve AND foot the bill. They'd have to do the same for every other club courting a superstar from another code. And if they're gonna get a deal like that, every other club WILL.

IMO only players who have done everything in League will possibly go to AFL. That is probably why Hayne turned AFL down.

people continually blame Gallop. the board is the one the makes the decisions. as it said in the thread about salary cap the "NRL Partnership Commitee" decided to increase the grant ... not Gallop decided. he is just the spokesperson most of the time and he is the one people vent their hate at.

just out of theory how do we compete with million dollar a season deals, even with no salary cap?

By having the position of CEO he has to face the inevitable criticism that comes with it. As a fan I don't know or care who the committee is, just like I have no idea who the broncos board members consist of and just like Cullen will cop the criticism for poor decisions by the Broncos.

Gallop is a weak leader, a good leader inspires his board/team to follow his vision.
Look at Greenberg, anything he wants go because he's a very good CEO which earns him the full respect and ultimately support of his board members.

Gallop and his pathetic board for that matter undersold the games TV rights BIG TIME and in professional sport TV deals are arguably by far the most important financial factor. The fact that NRL dominates AFL in the ratings year after year and breaks record after record yet has a TV rights deal significantly less then that of the AFL just proves how badly undersold the TV rights are. If the "NRL" got a TV rights deal that it really did deserve could easily have a salary cap of $6m and club grants equal to the salary cap.

First things first, Independent commission, too many conflicting interests in the current set up and a new leadership is required. Gallop's had his gallop and he failed to advance the game to a point it deserves to be at and instead from a financial perspective we are a second grade sport and the product is suffering as a result. NRL is a business and it needs to be run like one.

Gallop has done remarkably well during his time, IMO.

He has had to deal with a lot of shit.

Give us some examples of the successful things he has achieved as a CEO.
Crowd figures, money, sponsorship, club stability, competition quality, reputation of the game, etc
He has to put up with a lot of shit no doubt about it but that doesn't necessarily mean he's the right man for the job.
He's been in the job since 02, it might be time for a change.

He does have to please News LTD and the ARL which is why the independent commission needs to be set up ASAP as well.

He has had it tough I agree but you can't deny right now the game isn't in a good position and really is at threat and it is largely the NRL fault for not making things happen.

How about we just bring back Super League.. come on.. do it

How about we press the reset button.........
