Fantasy Footy

What does everyone think about signing free agents during lockout (as long as they havent played, and you have a player that hasnt played to swap them with)? A lot of the big NFL fantasy leagues allow it.

I like it, but think if a player you want to pick up has played, you should be able to pick them up if you can spare an unused squad member.

If you are watching a game and can see that Tautau Moga is worth drafting, you shouldnt have to wait a couple of days for everyone to clue in.

I see, interesting. But clearly you couldnt then put him in ur top 17 to score points right?

I like it, but i can see it totally negating the point of having the free agent bid system too. ppl will just get the players they want before the round is over isntead of waiting til the week to do it via auction

It's just tactics IMO. In NFL fantasy I often left a free space on my roster into the lockout so I could take advantage of injuries and new players.

I like the option where the player is actually allowed to enter the 17 immediatily, but only if it is to replace a player from the 17 who either got injured or canned at the last moment. This to prevent the bringing in of a player who may have had a high score and trade him for one of your 17 who had a crappy day...

No, you couldn't play them in your team that round if they had already played or started to play for that round. However, if I owned Isaac De Gois, and found out he was injured in warm ups, if the game hasn't kicked off, I reckon I should be allowed to pick up John Morris and immediately insert him into my fantasy line up.

As for the free agent bid system, I don't actually know how it works? NFL has waivers, which I think kinda suck, but that's obviously not a part of NRL? I'd be interested to know how the bidding system is supposed to work.

I had a think about this. I dont like the idea of being able to sign a player on a weekend that has already played. It takes out the excitement of the free agent system, would be no point having it if that was the case. However, i have built in the funtionality so if you owned De gois, and he got injured before the game starts, you could pick up john morris, and play him immediately. As long as both players have not yet played, they can be traded.

The free agent system is something i found after a lot of research. Basically u get 100 points for the year. Each week, you enter a silent auction for the players you want. You might want to get say, Adam Reynolds. You know he will be a popular choice that week, so you choose to bid 5 points on him. Then, say coxy also wants him, he bids 4 points. Neither of you know how many points the other has bids, thats where the strategy comes into it.. how many ppl want this guy? is 5 enough ? etc. player with the highest bid at the time of trades processing, wins the trade. After that, all trades are first in, first served until the completion of the round

At the moment, you cant start the season without a full squad. Something i will have to look at i guess. Should be easy enough to do i think. So glad i got bhq in on this, lots of good feedback

I actually really like that free agent bidding idea. I will say though that I do find your use of the word trading to be slightly confusing. I normally associate trading as being with other teams. I.e. Broncospwn will give Meat77 Dallas Johnson in exchange for Steve Michaels. I take it those sorts of trades are still in the game? You seem to be using it more in a sense of free agency activity and picking up and dumping players. Pedantic, I know!

100 points is an interesting number. I think it may be too high, but on the other hand the extremeness of bidding so high really does disadvantage you against the other teams. Still, if you were to bid 80% (i.e. 80 points), you could theoretically win 20 other auctions on players that might not be hot commodities but still players you'd like to secure. That's a lot. On the other hand, if you had a bid limit of say, 10, then bidding 80% of your points means you can only win 2 more players at most. The latter, IMO, seems more tactically restrictive, which is what I think you want to achieve with such a system?

Yeh, you can still trade between teams, but i see your point about the wording used. I've started to use "Sign" throughout the system if the player is a free agent, and Trade if the player is owned by someone else. Just need to clean that up.

Over the next few days I'll work on the ability to be able to drop a player, without getting a replacement. I really like the idea of going into a weekend with a free spot in case something happens to one of your 17.

We used 100 points last year, and a few of us used up all our points, while the others didnt use half of them. I guess it comes down to the competitiveness. If a player was decent, rarely did they go for 1 point, just because no-one was game enough to try win them with 1 point. See how you guys go this year, and we will reassess it at the end and make changes if need be

Just an update guys.

I have made the following changes to the site today - all of these are detailed in the "How to play" page anyway
- ability to release a player (this can also be done during lockout, as long as his team has not started playing)
- when making a free agent bid (or an instant player signing after trades processing time or lockout), if you have a vacancy in your team, you will not be required to release a player to sign the new one.
- changed the wording on the player research page. If a player is owned by another team, the trade link will read "Trade". Otherwise it will read "Sign".
- Detailed what kind of process is occuring in the trade popup. If it is entering a bid, it will tell u, if its proposing a trade with another team it will tell u, and if its an immediate signing, it will tell u.

Again, all of this is detailed in the How to play page. If there are still any questions, let me know and I will try and make the rules page more detailed.

Do you want us to point out possible ways to exploit the rules as well, or should I save it for next year when I'm playing for real?

Haha, id love to hear all ur ideas. You've already given me plenty of features to add. Definitely been helpful, so if you knows ways to exploit it, let me know and ill try patch em up!

It's more of a finals exploit than anything, but if you had 4 really good bench forwards, and a really shitty winger, you'd just deliberately "play" a non-playing winger so that one of your awesome bench forwards could score full points.

It would obviously require a really strong 4th bench forward and a really #### 2nd winger, but my fantasy team this year would totally employ this tactic as James McManus is pretty much my 2nd winger, and Elijah Taylor my 4th bench forward.
