Farah open to $500,000 offers

I wish we'd kept Civo, Priddis, Barnes and Prince

I wish we kept Darren Mapp.

i wish we'd kept Shane Perry :roll:

Jesus christ if a shooting star was to fly past this forum right now imagine the salary cap problems we would of just inherited!! :)

No point for a new thread;

Words on the street is that Titans and Smith talks have fallen through and Cam is looking likely to resign with Storm.

This is not only shit for the Broncos; it is shit for Cam Smith and Rugby League.

I thought that was the case anyway when the name Farah came up and as for being shit for the Broncos, matter of perspective really, Smith is a great player but that doesn't mean getting into a bidding war over him is in the Broncos best interests both short and longterm when other suitable options exist, frankly I prefer the Storm retain him and spend big in the process and not be in a position to lure our players away then be in a position of needing to recruit in areas and having money to do so.

I'd love the Broncos to call the Storm's bluff, make a big offer for Smith so Storm have to beat it. Send the bastards over the salary cap unless they sack people :P

Except it would probably back-fire on us and Storm would say "See ya Smithy", then we'd have to let go half our team to pay him.

As a player, Smith would definitely be worth around 600K a year. He can make any forward pack look good, so if we were to just get rid of some of our forwards, it wouldn't really make that much of a difference.

You all make interesting points except;

GC- what bidding war? Storm made their offer last year (before finals series), Smith said he wanted to move back to SEQLD and needed to consider options. Broncos could at least make a bid.

Coxy- Storm have/are already losing a few players for 09 and 2010. They would be able to retain him anyways. The offer they made before semi's was decent enough for him and his manager to be happy with. Won't send them bust. Biggest problem I see, is with Storm losing so much quality over the next 2 seasons (especially in the forwards) they aren't going to be the formidable team they have been last 3 seasons. This is bad for Smith IMO (read; "doing an Asotasi")

Flutterby- I don't think we would need to lose half our team. Lose two of either PJ, McCullough or Gorrell; as well as the money that Lockyer won't be (imo) demanding. There would be room by 2010.

Of course, this all means squat because clearly Cullen (who is a shrewd recruiter LOLZ) or whoever is recruiting these days haven't so much as batted an eyelid in his direction. I can't believe a player of this quality is showing interest and our club is doing nothing. I really hope there is or something has happend behind the scenes that we don't know. Please let there be a better reason, other than "he doesn't fit into our plans". If we did throw him an offer and he declined fair enough, but to show no interest at all is ridiculous.

What bidding war? so you think that the Storm won't be the slightest bit keen to retain Smith? He won't consider going overseas either? So he says he wants to come back to SEQLD doesn't automatically mean he will or even wants to and could just be a ploy to up the ante with the Storm to get more out of them, wouldn't be the first time a player has done that. As far as making a bid only if a serious one can be made otherwise theres no point and I can't see one being made that isn't in the deep end, hardly a position we are in to be able to afford(hell you might not have noticed but we have been struggling to retain players as it is) nor can afford to be in when we have issues like the frontrow need addressing (and Smith won't solve that) and the need to ensure that the squad as a whole doesn't suffer.

Your limiting your scope to just one player, I think you need to look at what the squad needs both shortterm and the longterm and we have players that we need to be able to retain now and players in the lowergrades that will be coming through. Everyone was up in arms about losing Kemp for example, what happens if Yow Yeh turns out to be a quality winger as well and because we went all out for Smith we aren't in a position to retain Yow Yeh? Yow Yeh isn't the only player we need to be in a position to retain in the coming years, we aren't going to be able to rely on Lockyer forever and while you might argue Cameron Smith would help there the loss of Lockyer will still be huge and we need to ensure that across the board we have the depth and quality to deal with it.

Would he be a quality addition to the side? I don't doubt that Hammo, its the cost that worries me, especially when we have already paid a high price as it is to retain what we got for next season.

for real?

I disagree, I reckon he's worth half that but I know he wouldnt accept anything under 400 so bugger that imo.

Lockyer47 & GC- bids or no bids, the point is, it's like you are want to buy a car and you see one you like. You think (read know) the owner wants more than what you can offer, but unless you make an offer, how'd you even know?

They should at least table something to guage what he is really asking for.

No its more like this, you want a car, you know you like that luxury car you see but reality sinks in your head thats never going to happen and you know that you are in absolute no position to afford that car and you decide to look at something a lot more affordable or stick with what you have, not live in fantasy land and not put yourself in financial dire shape just to do so.

The latest on Smith is that the Storm are set to offer him a deal of 400k + sponsership that will make the deal worth 600k a season in total and his close to accepting, I couldn't see us coming close to an amount like that.
