Although last night was disappointing, we need to reflect on a season in which we overachieved enormously in the space of a year. I was guessing that this team would realistically finish 5th or 6th, with a top-4 finish a year or two away. I am so proud of the boys, especially for the heart they showed last night.
My favourite games were the two finals at Lang Park, for obvious reasons, but there were a few other wins which were immensely satisfying:
Round 6 v Roosters - Hunt wins the game for us against one of our fiercest rivals by scoring a try in golden-point. Need I say more?
Round 11 v Knights - The only Baby Broncos game of the year sees the team go behind 18-6 and they look down and out. Milford, Reed and Oates stand up for a surprise comeback victory away from home.
Round 15 v Storm - According to Gus Gould, the best defensive display of any team in the NRL era. Despite missing Cronk and Slater, Melbourne launch raid after raid on Brisbane's try-line, forcing 12 drop-outs in the match. Despite this, Brisbane, missing Hodges and Parker, hold the Storm scoreless in the second half for a nail-biting 14-12 win.
Round 18 v Bulldogs - Only 3 days after Origin III, Brisbane travel to Sydney against a heavily favoured Canterbury outfit. In their first game since losing Josh McGuire, Brisbane more than match it with the Dogs' forwards and set the template for future displays of forwards excellence in a gritty 16-8 win.
Round 25 v Rabbitohs - 5 days after going down to a 14-man Sydney Roosters team, the Broncos put in their best display for the year, effectively winning the game within the first 20 minutes. Hunt and Milford put on an attacking masterclass to run in 5 tries between them, with 8 scored in total. For the first time in NRL history, a team scores 5 tries from inside their own half. Pure perfection.
