Penalties is just as much confidence as it is technique etc. The best PK Taker in a team could be a a cb realistically if they have good technique and handle pressure well.

Coach will usually come up with a PK order, but subs does change this depending who has come on and off, and then players will also sometimes decide if someone is confident etc.

To me, Herrington did not look comfortable at all, understandably. So to me, one of the more senior players should have been taking penalties over him at that point.

Hell, Rogerio Ceni was a GK and he was an excellent penalty taker.

As mentioned above, confidence is the biggest thing. Plus a bit of technique. Get both of those right, 9 times out of 10 you'll score.

As @Brocko said, it doesnt really matter. I've seen many defenders take better penalties than forwards. One of the best penalties i ever saw was from a Goalkeeper!
Very poor quality video this, but its a great penalty.

Whatever credit Popovic gained for playing Beach this WC he threw away by making that substitution v Egypt.

Ryan wasn't up to it and didn't look remotely like saving a pen.

Yep... I've only seen the highlights but he had some seriously itchy feet.

Was giving it away far too early.

Didn't Ryan get subbed for a pen shoot out at one point... the grey wiggle or whatever.

If so then it's not like he's a renowned penalty specialist

Think it was last WC/Asian Champions, he got subbed out for Redmayne for pens
