Finals Week 1 - Broncos vs Warriors - Post Match Discussion

If it happens... Manly vs Broncos would be played in Sydney, right?

I'm pretty confident about beating Manly again. They'll be without Glenn Stewart too. I'm kind of worried about the Dragons, they have the talent to win the comp, hopefully they'll still lack the motivation.

Yeah, even their match against the Cows wasn't at Brookvale. I personally don't quite rate them outside of that ground though.

Dragons aren't the minor premiers..
They are the reining premiers though.

i thought the "so we play the dragons next week if melbourne win tomorrow, dont we?" was reason enough to see i was talking about the dragons and made a mistake.....

anyway doesnt matter. the dragons worry me. they showed glimpses of their best against the tigers, looked like they were going to run away with it for a while there.

I wouldn't worry too much .. dragons are shot ducks imo .. they've got an absolute shitt-tonne of self doubt coursing through their veins at the moment .. and Suncorp stadium against an extremely confident broncos team and a 50,000 crowd is not the situation where the dragons suddenly, miraculously find their mojo again.

I wasn't confident about this game and was frustrated with our attack all year so I've been put in my place haha.

I feel like the Broncos are kind of robbed having to play the Dragons after they lost and we won. How is that fair, we also finished well above them on the ladder, nearly second with daylight next, now we are practically on level pegging as Dragons and fighting for our life in sudden death. Doesn't seem like just reward to me. MacIntyre system sucks. I still reckon we will belt Dragons at Suncorp just wouldn't seem fair if we lost. I thought Cowboys were hard done by tonight. The unfair Hopoate try to get Manly on the board swung the momentum majorly, outcome might of been different if it went to the video ref. Also Yow Yehs no try was a $h!t decision there was no separation. Confident in Broncos all the way

Had my doubts but the boys really stepped up tonight and I'm proud as punch about our forward pack (even Ando atoned for the early error) and Jacky Reed. Of course just about every Bronco played well tonight, even Copley but I thought they really stood out.

Just wanted to give a special mention to Hunt too. Now, he won't figure in my voting but I thought tonight was his best game in first grade. Gave us good momentum around the ruck ensuring we lost nothing when the equally as good Macca went off and even made some halfbreaks out of dummy half through his own confidence. And this might sound silly to say but that performance tonight gives me some faith that he'll be very handy once he goes to halfback. There's a lot of things about his game at dummy half that reminds me of Cooper Cronk at a similar age and I believe Hunt can really make a fist of it.

Good win, bring on Week 2!

And Josh McGuire is almost my new favorite player after his last few weeks, he is unstoppable at the moment. How has he managed to get poked in the same eye 3 times this year?!

Agreed. I think the whole Hunt at dummy half project is aimed at toughening him up for the halfback spot next season. Throwing him in the deep end with the forwards will leave him in good stead for what gets sent his way in defence as a playmaker. He also gets the opportunity to become accustomed to the speed of the NRL - he'll be more comfortable and know what to expect next year. Plus, he gets to spend time with Locky and observe how he operates on the field.

Was originally thinking he should be in QCup but after seeing the way he's improved, I've sorta change tact.

But I guess we'll wait and see how it pans out in 2012.. in the meantime, we've still got a comp to win this year!

Nah, I'm a big fan of the McIntyre system. After finishing 3rd, we did what we needed to do - WIN. If Melbourne lose tomorrow we get the week off, and are one game away from the final. If they win we have the home ground advantage against the losers of the first week. I like the sudden death nature of the McIntyre system.

Weeks and weeks of us being superior to the Dragons and building a substantial gap on the ladder of them then to win in week 1 and they lose and we are pitted in against them in a sudden death playoff seems unfair. But you right we do get the home ground advantage which cant be underestimated and that's what finals footy is all about. On the bright side it would be a sweet feeling to kill off the Dragons and rub Bennetts and Sowards nose in it plus then get Thaiday back for the GF qualifier.
McIntyre system doesnt reward regular season efforts enough though. We won the same amount of games as Manly but now looks like we have to win a sudden death match to earn the right to play them on their turf( I know it won't be at Brookvale, but still...) If we are goof enough we will regardless, but lose and I'd feel hard done by. It's just the way it's panned out, Tigers finished lower than us but now only have to beat a battered Warriors to progress while we have to take on the reigning premiers?

Man, what a game! Loved it, loved it, loved it...

Since my thoughts have been pretty much expressed in this thread, I'll just leave an image of how I felt right at the 80 mins whistle:

This is the first time I've allowed myself to think that there is a chance we may go all the way this year. While I still believe that this has been a great season, regardless of what happens from here on in, I actually think this competition is winnable for us now. I wouldn't say we're favourites, but I think we can beat any team with our current form.

WTF! I wanted to watch the replay on FoxSports (should be on now) but the US Open is on. :-(

I like tennis but geeeeeez.
