Finals Week 1 - Broncos vs Warriors - Post Match Discussion

That was collectively an astonishing performance from our backrow. Parker, Glenn and Gillett were the three best players on the field and considering the hole that Sammy leaves this was a huge performance. McGuire and Hannant were great as well and our pack in general laid a great platform for our kids, defensively we were spot on in the middle where the Warriors can really hurt sides. In general this was our most complete performance this year from 1-17 we were excellent, even Copley who I have big doubts over was extremely good even getting away for big metres a couple of times.

Te'o was no mug last night either IMO.

Yeah he was excellent, looked much more comfortable that bit tighter in rather than in the centres.

He is still very soft on his bad arm in defense but I can live with that. O think we have the best backrow of all time at the broncos right now. Big call I know.

just gotta mention wallace's attacking kicking game. it is spot on every time. never a bad kick. massive asset to have at finals time.

Yep. Only criticism I still have of Wallace is he runs too much. Sometimes he holds up the pass too long and so going wide isn't an option. Earlier pass is sometimes the better play

His lack of pace doesn't really help. Even if he spots a gap, he's one of the slower halfbacks going around, so it's usually covered by the time he gets there.

Has improved a lot this season though.

Wallace's running game is still one of the worst in the comp IMO. He runs the ball just for the sake of it, it never seems to amount to anything.

When Wallace was in his top form he was running the ball a lot. I am happy to let him keep doing it.

Yeah. His running game was one of dozens of areas he sucked last year ;-)

Been excellent this year.

That simply blew me away last night. I cannot recall the last time I was so rapt by the performance of our team. I must admit I was really nervous going into the game last night and I feared we might get blown off the park. To see what occurred was totally unexpected, I have such hope now not only for this season but for the next few seasons if we can keep the nucleus of this side together. I have really noticed at the back end of this season that Locky is more and more taking a back seat and letting Wallace and McCullough run the show. It is like he and Hook are already prepping the team for next year.

I agree with the above about Hunt as well, it may turn into another master-stroke in the coming years for Hook to have used him as the back up hooker for all of this season.

Are you saying Hunt might play 7 next year with Wallace at 6 and Macca playing 80?

Either way if Wallace keeps playing the way he has since he came to the Broncos(bar last year) then we can cope without Locky next year.

I think that could be on Spawn. Hook will probably give the first chance to who ever shows the best form in the trials. If it is Hunt, Wallace might be at 5/8, if it is Norman or Capewell he stays at half.

Apart from when we dropped off and conceded two busts up the middle after getting out to 24-0 it was a faultless performance. We didn't have one bad player on the night. Every player deserves a wrap but special mentions to:

Beal - Outstanding game. His running game and support play was deadly but his best moment was his defensive work when he steered that Warriors player (Mateo?) to the side line and cut him down. I forgot how good Gerard was for us at fullback earlier this year. He is an absolute star.

McGuire - He's hands been the best prop since Origin finished. I can't reinforce how important he's been to our success over the last seven weeks. He's playing huge minutes.

Glenn - I love Alex Glenn and hope he becomes one of our long-serving captains. He bleeds for the club - it shows though in his pressers and out on the field. Great game - he troubled the Warriors all night.

Wallace - His general and high kicking has been spot on during the last month. I reckon he's the best defensive halfback in the game too. Some of his tackles close to our goal line in that second half were copybook.

Not wanting to sound cocky but if we produce the same kind of play against the Dragons we'll roll them.

And not wanting to get too far ahead of myself, but the Lockyer farewell could really take us all the way this year. There was a real sense of occasion last night at the stadium when his name flashed up on the screen during the team announcements, when he scored that try late in the first half and when he clapped the fans on his way back to the mark during Parker's kicks for goal. That will be magnified ten times over on Saturday night. The momentum we're getting from him is irresistible at the moment. I'm convinced it's giving our players a huge leg up.

Will be interesting to see how we go under sustained pressure. The Warriors were horrible. Easily the worst effort of any of the finals teams. Whether they only faltered because of an excellent performance from our end remains to be seen, however we won't get another Manu during the finals.

Still very concerned about our attack against any sort of quality defence, specifically our reliance on the kick to Yow Yeh.

Well not until we face Beau Ryan in the Grand Final :P
