First coach sacked

I `ve listened to a cpl of pod vasts with Dobbo .
I `m with Selwyn bloody good bloke . Not such a good coach .

Inside ball pod cast review .
Dobbo is a fool . Kevvie isn`t sour and said he`s proud of his work .Broncos didn`t want him . Move on .
Very impressive .

Hasn't Webster gone backwards?

He had the Warriors firing, made it to a prelim when nobody gave them a chance. Coach of the year.

Benji, you sort of expect it to take a bit of time given the garbage heap of a situation he walked into. Recruited a few decent players, I don't think this season is make or break but you'd expect to see some improvement from them.

Definitely gone backwards. He had everyone on the same page that first year and everything just seemed to click. Now he's lost 2 very experienced players and only replaced 1. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Benji needs to be pushing for the middle of the table to remain safe I think. The addition of Bula and Api this weekend should hopefully see a change from last week.

Josh Hannay has been thrown up as a possibility for a few jobs in the last few years; I'd say he would be in with a good shout.

Not enough water under the bridge I think to give Kevvie another shot just yet.

He falls into that rookie category though right? I can't see the Cows doing that again tbh. I'd rate him as the only rookie with a shot at it though.

Absolutely. All the other fairly fancied rookie Coaches already have jobs now. Hannay has to be the next rookie cab off the rank you'd think.

Given the form of some teams over the weekend who do we think?

1. Payten
2. Webster and Benji
3. Robbo

That's the way I'm leaning. I'd have AOB in there tbh but he seems to be untouchable and Ponga seems to save him every time. I can't split Benji and Webster...both are running out of good will and excuses IMO. Robbo, yeah they've lost some talent and the injuries to Walker and Cheese are unfortunate but letting a player like May go when you're already losing JWH is just baffling. Robbo has won 3 premierships though and has been in this position before and turned it around, not to mention those injuries, so I'd say he's the most unlikely.

For me the front runner has to be Payten. A few more performances like that on the weekend will likely see him gone at some point this season. Plus there's always been the rumblings behind the scenes...regardless of whether that stuff has been overblown or not, where there's smoke there's fire IMO.

All of that is dependent on who's available though. What's the point of punting a coach without a replacement lined up? Brad Arthur is coaching in the SL and Holbrook is assistant coach at the Roosters. Demetriou is coaching PNG only I think...I don't think he's an assistant anywhere. That's about it when it comes to coaches that have at least coached in the top grade. After that you're looking at the next "big thing" and none of those clubs should be looking at a rookie.
Robbo is fine, safe as houses. The Roosters will simply throw money at the problem (under the table of course) and inevitably they will make it go away. They'll probably have Cobbo, Harry Grant, Stephen Crichton and Nicho Hynes at the club in 3 years from now, and ChatGPT could probably coach them to another Grand Final at that point.

Benji has time. The Tigers don't have guys banging down the door to Coach there, he's a club favourite like Kevvie was, and he rightly deserves a bit of time considering he inherited such hot garbage in the first place.

Webster arguably falls into the same category. Not a club legend, but similar roster challenges inherited, and again, no one really breathing down his neck for his job. He's probably fine too.

Payten has none of those excuses, and none of those safety nets. He's easily the favourite in my books. He was arguably the highest rated of the recent-ish graduates, and he's easily been the biggest let down so far.

The Titans love a sacking, so I wouldn't rule out Des being on the chopping block within the next 18 months. AOB is probably next up if the Knights don't push deep into the finals.

Has anyone considered that the next upcoming vacancy might not actually be a sacking, but potentially a retirement at Melbourne? Signed until 2027 but options in his favour if he's had enough? A Premiership between now and then would have to be a big call for him to go forward after that?

I think AOB is still at risk... knights have gone all in on Brown and they will want to show Ponga that they can compete.

If they can find a coach that will do a better job than AOB I think they will jump at it.

I would say Ponga would have a big say on the coach as well... to keep KP in Newcastle they might basically make him a kingmaker down there.... although I still think he would up and leave them for rorters

Depends how much he likes playing Golf. Nothing improves your golf game like playing for the Roosters for some 'unkown' reason...

AOB definitely isn't safe, but I doubt they'd sack him before next season with Brown on board at least partially has run it's course. Payten might not have that much breathing space, so I'd say he's in the gravest danger.

Yeah it's more that knights are trying to show that they will compete... if they offer nothing this year then I could see them making a move.

Unfortunately there aren't many coaches on the market to make that move with.

If Madge was still on the market and Newcastle started slow, I could see them pulling the trigger

Honestly don't see AOB getting sacked this year unless they completely shit the bed and run bottom four. Still fairly new, roster being overhauled and as you alluded to, not a lot of obvious alternatives on the market as it stands.

If they're lower/mid table by mid-season next year, that's a very different story.
