STEVE Folkes will quit as coach of the Bulldogs at the end of the season after 11 years as head coach of the club.

He told Bulldogs CEO Todd Greenberg of his decision early this afternoon and told his players just before a 2pm training session.

"I have been giving the matter plenty of thought in recent weeks and I feel the decision is the right one and not only for me but for the club as well, " a statement from Folkes read.

"My decision will end the speculation that's been rife for the past few months about my future and will enable me and the players to get on with the job of winning football matches and being in contention at the business end of the season."

Folkes said he planned to continue coaching and hoped to remain in Australia but would move overseas if necessary.

"I reckon I still have another 10 years ahead of me as a coach and this decision will enable me to reinvent myself once my obligations with the Bulldogs finish, " he said.

Kevin Moore here we come! For the doggies that is....not surprising folkes quit really

He jumped of the plank before they pushed him.. No real surprise, the Dogs will struggle in the next few years IMO.

Suprise [icon_wink Another who jumped before he got pushed ey.
Good luck to him in the future after he finishes with the Dogs.May it be in SL [icon_pray.

Wonder if the gun was being pushed into his back at the same time he made his "decision".

Well, he got told he had six weeks to prove himself. Looks like he already knows the outcome of the next two games [icon_lol1.

I don't mind the guy. Reminds me of a young Bennett, never gives anything away and a lot of what he says is aimed at taking the heat off his players. Could have done better with the sides he had as Willie Mason has been mentioning but has lacked quality halves as Sherwin is crap 3 out of every 4 weeks and Anasta was never consistent as a 6 for him. God luck to him I assume he will go to the Super League or to Penrith next year eusa_think

yeh i think he would fit in well at penrith.

Yeah just what Penrith need a coach to let Players go off the rails and to create a great culture at the club.. [icon_lol1.

A lot of the Bulldogs problems were not from Folkes but from the Hughes's and Mortimers's on the board who ran it like an old boys club not a professional business. I think Folkes had very little support upstairs and I assume knowing his personality would have liked nothing more but to punish those idiots in his side but his hands were tied.

Seems like Kearney may be the man who will get the job.No problems with his coaching seeing as Bennett approves of him but as for the discipline of the club getting better. Not under Kearney I wouldnt think

Of all the coaches I don't like, he is one of the few I don't mind. He's not a big head or anything is he

I heard that the assistant coach Kevin Moore will be taking over.
