It began with a random phone call. In late August, little Sani Moimoi grabbed his mum's mobile, flicked through her contact list and dialled Eels chairman Roy Spagnolo.

The nine-year-old waited patiently for the dial tone to connect him from Auckland to Sydney. When Spagnolo answered, Sani only wanted to discuss one topic.

His dad, Fuifui.

wtf low by the NRL. I cant stand the Eels but that was a huge thing to do and to be shot down by the Nrl. F-U NRL

Cold, but fair enough unfortunately.. You have to draw the line somewhere.

$1500 though? If they were going to count any of it towards the cap then just the actual cost of the flight should have been sufficient. This is over the top and as the article says - another reason for players to want to leave the NRL.

fair call, otherwise they might start allowing players to fly overseas to visit family

$1500 is a bit much. Airfare, fair enough but you can't say the time spent getting the kid over here and having someone meet him at the airport would be worth $1400. Sure it's going to help the Eels retain him but it's just stupid. Schubert has pulled that figure from somewhere the sun doesn't shine.

Where does the $1500 come from?

"We are paying Darren Lockyer $400,000 a year"
"Ahh yeah. $600,000 off the cap should do it"

where in the rules say "you will be charged 10times the amount you spend on a player"

The amount may be bollocks but the principle appears to be sound.

If it was so cheap to bring the kid over, and it meant so much to Moi Moi to have him here, why didn't he just pay the couple of hundred dollars himself?

Bingo!

Because it was a surprise.

"Oi Moi Moi. Give us $500"
"Why?"
"Not to bring your son over to surprise you that's for sure!"

All well and good, but that's a fringe benefit the club gave him. Therefore it has to count on the cap.

Rules is rules.

I don't think there are too many people arguing against that. Well I know I'm not.

I want to know how they came up with such a shitty price? That bloke must be like Peter Griffin and haggling.

It wasn't $134.50. That was the price if they presented a coupon. But it had expired.

more to the story.

Although Parramatta officials accepted Schubert's ruling last week, Gallop said it was still open for them to plead the value be reduced to the fare that was actually paid by the club.

He also said the NRL would not count Sani's trip alone, meaning the Eels could have the $1000 exempted if it can be proved that Moimoi paid for his mother and brother.
