I guess rules is rules but this happens because the Eels wanted it to be a 'surprise'.

It does suck how a nice gesture by the club becomes a negative impact on the cap. Certainly doesn't encourage clubs to do things like this free-mindedly does it?

I would think that something as big as the cap would have some sort of clause for this sort of shit, and the clause cannot be used as part of contract negotiations.
