GAL best forward since the 50's

Webcke was better.

I dunno, I'm biased and I dont watch any rugby league games that aren't Broncos games, so I'm not exactly an authority on this.

I'd have Tallis and Petro ahead of Gallen.

Like illegally using the elbow on tackled players, eye gouging etc.

To be fair, he's nowhere near as dirty as he used to be.

Agreed though that Webcke rarely, if ever, bothered with that rubbish.

If best includes fair play then Webcke is better, but in terms of performance he is certainly the best since I've been watching. Impossible for me to say over 50 years though as I never watched old games.

In my time only Lazarus is better and that is because of impact he had on all those he played with and then add his 6 titles with 3 teams he also had a complete allround game as a prop.

All this jizz over Gallen is making me hate him again.

Seriously? Gallen? No way. I could list 10 forwards that were better than Gallen. Gallen has been great for about 3 years. Prior to this he was nothing more than a good backrower. Guys like Webcke, Lazarus, Tallis all have it over him at the moment.

Seriously as much as I admire this guy in the blue jumper, he would need to perform like this for another 3 years straight to be compared with some of the greats .

This. He wasn't even a walk up starter for NSW until last year's series. Before that he was often a liability because of the stupid penalties he would give away. Great player yes but has a fair way to go before he can be compared to the greats.

He is a very good player. The reason I think he is rated so highly is that he moves into the prop position and everyone goes ZOMG he is a prop too.......how wonderful.

Agree with Rocky he would need to perform like this over another few years and perhaps actually winning a trophy would be good too. He hasn't even won anything with NSW ffs.

Remember him single handedly gifting QLD one of the games in 2009 with 3 or 4 penalties in a row. Lol.

If we are judging him on his entire career, no, he is not the best forward......YET. He hasnt been doing what he has doing now for all his career, only the last 3 or so years. having said that, if we went just off his last 3 years, then gallen is easily the best forward i have ever seen. webcke, civo, lazo all have nothing on him. he plays 80 mins EVERY week, not 50 - 60 the others could do at best. not only does he play 80 mins, but each of his hitups is aggressive, and more often than not has a chance of second phase play. the guy is a machine, and deserves all the praise he is getting. i HATE nsw, but i have nothing but respect for gallen. not only is he the hardest working player i have ever seen, he has also cleaned up his game and gone from being one of the most hated players, to one of the games shining lights.

totally disagree with all those on here saying he has to win something to be considered a great forward. he has held NSW and cronulla on top of his shoulders for years and its not his fault they lose. if he was in the broncos team (or another successful team like storm) and played for qld, i have no doubt he would already be considered the best forward ever seen. the guy is a machine and his workrate alone ranks him among the best.

also, i think because he has been playing backrow / lock for most of his career, people tend to instantly ignore any suggestion of him being the best prop around. if he had been at prop for his entire career, there would be far less conjecture. the guy has been playing prop all his career, and since nsw moved him there officially last year we have seen him step up yet another level. right now, he is the best forward i have ever seen and definitely the best prop / forward in the game.

I can't see anywhere in that article where someone says he is the best forward in the last 50 years. Like others have said, he is on recent form one of the greats ( top 20 ) but he has a bit of making up to do because he was just a grub in his early years.

I would place Lazarus, Webcke Civo, Clyde, Price, Tallis, Lindner all above Gallen. It's too difficult too go back further and compare evenly to players in the 70s and 80s , different rules etc.

This just another NSWs soggy sao jizzfest because they haven't got much else to write about.

If anything the game is probably harder now, especially for forwards. The size and strength of the guys you're playing against has increased by a huge margin, as has the speed of the game. Even today's fringe first-graders would dominate if you gave them a Delorean and sent them back to pre-1990.
I never used to like Gallen; I still remember the testicle-grabbing and face raking in his past. But you have to give the guy credit; he's cleaned his game right up and worked hard to become not only an excellent player, but a strong leader too. If you were a recruiter building a new club from scratch, he'd definitely be one of your first targets.

I saw this subject and I wondered if Glenn Lazarus's middle name was Andrew or Anthony...because it couldn't possibly be about Gallen...fark NSW press can overhype a guy who is, admittedly, very good, but best in 60 years? Give me a break!

NSW beatup :shake:

Definitely... No one denies he is a great player but NSW are waaaaaaaaaaaaay too quick to come out and say these things all the time. Great forward, but not the best in 50 years. In terms of work rate and stats he is right up there, but I would never consider stats to be the main category in the making of a great player. Personally I think it is the qualities that can't be measured that make am 'elite' player.
