Truthfully I would have liked Slater at fullback with Boyd taking a wing. That's so we had an extra ball player, someone with 5/8 skills as well as all the normal wing skills. The down side is losing Oates extra forward strengths.

What got me with the reaction to Slater's 'omission' is that a lot of the clips they're using to justify their outrage is from 13 years ago. They even had the audacity to show a clip on NRL Tonight of Slater getting one up on Boyd...7 years ago in the game before Melbourne were exposed for cheating the salary cap.

Speaking to more people about it, I can understand that as a spectacle, omitting Slater may have hurt the appeal of the contest but if you're going to discuss his merits, use clips from 2017. It isn't like he's been bad, but using footage from 7 to 13 years ago isn't doing anybody any favours.

It's a pity the whole spin is detracting from the merits of the argument.

Watching Slater go around with Cronk and Smith in the game against the Tits at Suncorp (in 2017), was a pleasure as a pure RL fan, regardless of how much I dislike the fucking Mexican cheats.

That combination alone was enough to make the selection obvious, added to the value of not having O'Neill in the team... win win!

P.S. This has no bearing on Boyd's value as a FB, especially to the Broncos.

Slater - 14.7 runs, 119.6 metres, 0.3 tries, 0.7 line-breaks, 0.7 line-break assists, 0.9 try-assists, 1.8 offloads, 5.9 tackles, 2.6 missed tackles, 4.4 tackle breaks, 1.1 errors, 0.3 penalties conceded.

The argument for Slater on form is there, he's been more productive in every offensive stat, but Origin boils down to discipline and defence, Boyd has been MUCH better defensively and far more disciplined. He also isn't a constant injury concern like Billy is these days, one hard tackle and Slater could be out for the series. I would've liked to have seen Slater get one last run, but I can completely understand Boyd getting the nod.

The last time Slater played origin he got belted by NSW. I believe back then, I was calling for GI to be given the number 1.
