Mark Gasnier has been welcomed back to the NRL but he faces an infinitely greater fight if he follows through on plans to reclaim the money he had invested in the game's loyalty fund before his switch of codes.

While NRL chief executive David Gallop said Gasnier was yet to make a formal request for the money, he confirmed he had heard rumblings the St George Illawarra centre was ready to pursue his lost investment.

Half of Gasnier's State of Origin and Test payments were placed in the fund before he walked out on the Dragons to join French rugby union side, Stade Francais, two years ago.

Given Gasnier played nine games for NSW and 15 Tests for Australia before leaving the NRL, he could have invested more than $50,000 in the fund.

However, Gallop indicated Gasnier's request would be met with short shrift.

"I'm not sure if a formal request has been made, but at this stage the simple answer is no," Gallop said.

"The idea was to provide a disincentive for players leaving the game to go to rugby union. It's not fair on the players that have stuck with rugby league to simply abandon the policy."

Gasnier's manager George Mimis, while refusing to confirm his client wanted the money back, said the matter was private.

"I'm not interested in commenting on what I would think is a confidential matter," Mimis said.

"If the NRL has commented on it obviously they're not as respectful of the confidential nature of the discussions."

Interestingly, the players union is believed to be pushing for an end to the forfeiture clause in relation to the fund.

As part of discussions over the upcoming collective bargaining agreement, it is believed the players will ask for the rules governing the fund to be altered.

While the fund initially was set up to discourage players switching codes, it is understood the players consider the rules redundant.

Over the past two years, Karmichael Hunt and Israel Folau have announced plans to join the AFL on mega-deals which dwarf their earnings in the NRL. Neither was dissuaded from switching codes by the thought of forfeiting the money they had invested in the loyalty fund.

does he even know the meaning of the word LOYALTY .... just because you have returned to league does not make him loyal. should he play test or origin footy again the money that goes to this fund (but he would start from scratch) he would get as long as he stays in league the rest of his career.

Hmmmm, if he earnt the money, help put bums on seats. Regardless of what its called the moneies his and should be given to him or put back into the fund with his name on it.

NRL doesn't know what loyalty means. We the fans have been dudded for years.

**** em..... go Gaz.

**** off gaz, there are rules in place, you broke em. so sad, too bad

Yeah, you chase the cash in another code then you've forfeited the loyalty money.

The money is there to entice players to stay in rugby league. If they can leave and come back and still get it there's no reason to stay is there? Idiot Gaz.

Probably need to make cut backs as they are going through too much sauce now Gasnier is back in the country

question about this loyalty fund. if a player retires, they then get the money right? whats to then stop them switching codes?

Doesn't loyal mean staying and not leaving? Sticking with whatever you're stuck on and shiz?

Gasnier Fail.

Loyalty could also be leaving, but coming back too. I suppose. Its not an anti leaving fund.

as far as i know, thats exactly what is it lol

^^^ this. It's for people who play their whole career in rugby league and don't go to yawnion or poofter ball.

So Queenslander's earlier question also remains - what's to stop them "retiring", getting their payout and then signing with another code/country?

Maybe there is some kind of clause that says you don't get it until you've been retired for a certain number of years.

maybe there is a clause that says they are required to return the money if they come out of retirement with another code
