Mark Gasnier has been welcomed back to the NRL but he faces an infinitely greater fight if he follows through on plans to reclaim the money he had invested in the game's loyalty fund before his switch of codes.
While NRL chief executive David Gallop said Gasnier was yet to make a formal request for the money, he confirmed he had heard rumblings the St George Illawarra centre was ready to pursue his lost investment.
Half of Gasnier's State of Origin and Test payments were placed in the fund before he walked out on the Dragons to join French rugby union side, Stade Francais, two years ago.
Given Gasnier played nine games for NSW and 15 Tests for Australia before leaving the NRL, he could have invested more than $50,000 in the fund.
However, Gallop indicated Gasnier's request would be met with short shrift.
"I'm not sure if a formal request has been made, but at this stage the simple answer is no," Gallop said.
"The idea was to provide a disincentive for players leaving the game to go to rugby union. It's not fair on the players that have stuck with rugby league to simply abandon the policy."
Gasnier's manager George Mimis, while refusing to confirm his client wanted the money back, said the matter was private.
"I'm not interested in commenting on what I would think is a confidential matter," Mimis said.
"If the NRL has commented on it obviously they're not as respectful of the confidential nature of the discussions."
Interestingly, the players union is believed to be pushing for an end to the forfeiture clause in relation to the fund.
As part of discussions over the upcoming collective bargaining agreement, it is believed the players will ask for the rules governing the fund to be altered.
While the fund initially was set up to discourage players switching codes, it is understood the players consider the rules redundant.
Over the past two years, Karmichael Hunt and Israel Folau have announced plans to join the AFL on mega-deals which dwarf their earnings in the NRL. Neither was dissuaded from switching codes by the thought of forfeiting the money they had invested in the loyalty fund.

does he even know the meaning of the word LOYALTY .... just because you have returned to league does not make him loyal. should he play test or origin footy again the money that goes to this fund (but he would start from scratch) he would get as long as he stays in league the rest of his career.
