Rising paceman Jhye Richardson has suffered another injury setback in his bid to return to Australia's Test squad for the Ashes.

The 25-year-old yesterday took part in his first Sheffield Shield match since early in the 2019-20 summer, picking off 34 runs from 49 balls and taking a late wicket on day one of Western Australia's clash with Tasmania.

But after finishing with 1-5 from two overs at stumps on the opening day, he failed to take to the field for day two of the WACA fixture, having suffered a back spasm during the warm-up.

His lengthy Sheffield Shield hiatus was a result of international duties and a shoulder injury that required two bouts of surgery, while he'd also been fighting a side strain and ankle troubles during the lead-up to this summer's domestic season.

"Horror luck," wrote sports reporter Nic Savage on Twitter.

Radio co-host Jacob Landsmeer posted: "(Richardson) left the ground with the doctor and physio in obvious discomfort".

Alright time to think Ashes, who is in your first test team?

Ok so it is against The Netherlands but regardless, this Irish bowler has just got a double hattrick!!!!! Two overturned on DRS and one a glove down leg side. Well done young fella, well done!

Its so windy there are no bails on in the WA game.

James Pattinson has retired from test cricket and Nathan Lyon has a concussion that keeps him out of the first shield game for NSW.

wow, hadnt heard the patto news, one of the unluckiest aussie quicks ever, plenty of times i think he really shouldve played ahead of starc and if hes 5 years younger or older he probably carves out a long test career, real shame.

That sucks, big shame we didn't see him playing test cricket regularly when he was younger due to injury because he was lethal. Up to Jhye to keep the pressure on Starc now.

James Seymour looks promising, a left handed Pucovski, complete with constant head knocks.

Racism in English Cricket finally being called out.

Turns out he should look at himself first.

Will Sutherland has Covid and so today’s Shield game between VIC and NSW has been called off.

Tanveer Sangha - man, how good is he going to be!
