CRICKET General Cricket Discussion - 2023/24

Yeah and I know it is on the back of two washouts but even last night, Australia was in cruise control, so I think the point sharing was actually a bit unfortunate.

Even so, a couple more injury concerns with Short looking our with a quad strain and Zampa looking pretty sore.

On a different point, you have to feel a little for Abbott right? He’s been bridesmaid so long for the ODI side and now test side. He was always first back up for ODI but has been leapfrogged now by the backups as well despite never really putting a foot wrong.

I’m not saying the selectors have got it wrong either, they’ve made the semis so clearly have got something right, I just feel a bit for Abbott.

Maxwell is living proof that if you play the rare knock, you will get a spot in the side.

He's good for a decent innings probably 1 out of 10 games? Not really good enough for mine, particularly in 50 overs. If he wants to go out there for a good old hack, he should stick to T20 where you can be excused for getting out.

Low scoring game, about 13 overs to bat, he faces 7 deliveries, one of them he hits for 6. Gets out the next ball. It won't change, he's been going too long to be able to change it. If we are chasing 320+, you can probably somewhat come into it. When you are setting up the game, 13 overs to go, last of the recognised batters. Not having it, need to do better.

The game was relatively close in the end, another 20-30 runs and it's potentially a different result.

A bit unfair to be honest. What about Connolly getting zero? Labushagne continuing to lose concentration once set and Inglis throwing his wicket away?

Australia don’t win the last World Cup without Maxwell. He is what he is and Australia will notice a hole there when he’s gone.

You are right, we don't win against Afghanistan without him, that was basically my point. That was his last significant contribution in a ODI with the bat, a couple of 30's here and there. He's ripe for the picking when he plays like that and the game situation doesn't need it.

But it his way. He isn't picked to be the linchpin and the issue with him is probably exacerbated by having no Marsh, Stoinis or Green because he is the only regular all rounder out there. I think at the end of the day as well, this Australian side was missing so many of its regular first teamers, the fact they made the semi and were in it up their eyeballs is a real credit to them, they should have been nowhere near it.

And even in this tournament, Maxwell played a pretty important role even in the win against England. I think the expectations are unrealistically high that he can do what he does all the time, no one really can but he does his type of job better than almost anyone else in the world.
