CRICKET General Cricket Discussion - 2023/24

Yeah and I know it is on the back of two washouts but even last night, Australia was in cruise control, so I think the point sharing was actually a bit unfortunate.

Even so, a couple more injury concerns with Short looking our with a quad strain and Zampa looking pretty sore.

On a different point, you have to feel a little for Abbott right? He’s been bridesmaid so long for the ODI side and now test side. He was always first back up for ODI but has been leapfrogged now by the backups as well despite never really putting a foot wrong.

I’m not saying the selectors have got it wrong either, they’ve made the semis so clearly have got something right, I just feel a bit for Abbott.

Maxwell is living proof that if you play the rare knock, you will get a spot in the side.

He's good for a decent innings probably 1 out of 10 games? Not really good enough for mine, particularly in 50 overs. If he wants to go out there for a good old hack, he should stick to T20 where you can be excused for getting out.

Low scoring game, about 13 overs to bat, he faces 7 deliveries, one of them he hits for 6. Gets out the next ball. It won't change, he's been going too long to be able to change it. If we are chasing 320+, you can probably somewhat come into it. When you are setting up the game, 13 overs to go, last of the recognised batters. Not having it, need to do better.

The game was relatively close in the end, another 20-30 runs and it's potentially a different result.

A bit unfair to be honest. What about Connolly getting zero? Labushagne continuing to lose concentration once set and Inglis throwing his wicket away?

Australia don’t win the last World Cup without Maxwell. He is what he is and Australia will notice a hole there when he’s gone.

You are right, we don't win against Afghanistan without him, that was basically my point. That was his last significant contribution in a ODI with the bat, a couple of 30's here and there. He's ripe for the picking when he plays like that and the game situation doesn't need it.

But it his way. He isn't picked to be the linchpin and the issue with him is probably exacerbated by having no Marsh, Stoinis or Green because he is the only regular all rounder out there. I think at the end of the day as well, this Australian side was missing so many of its regular first teamers, the fact they made the semi and were in it up their eyeballs is a real credit to them, they should have been nowhere near it.

And even in this tournament, Maxwell played a pretty important role even in the win against England. I think the expectations are unrealistically high that he can do what he does all the time, no one really can but he does his type of job better than almost anyone else in the world.

Maxwell is one of the best short form players ever, not just for Aus. In Odis he averages 33 with a strike rate of 126 - add to that his bowling and fielding and he’s a player that Australians won’t appreciate until he’s gone.

His job yesterday was to come in and push the total up into the 300s.

Edit: ofc he doesn’t ton up regularly, he’s a lower order player who, for most of his career, has come in and is expected to hit boundaries from the first ball. His 30s and 40s off 10-15 balls are more valuable at times than Smith’s grinding 80s off 120 balls.

I think he's a handy player to have but you don't want him coming in when you need someone to stabilise the innings. I know I will get shot down because immediately people will think back to the World Cup game against Afghanistan, we don't win that without him but it also has to be said, that was his best innings in ages.

Best short form players.. ever? No, I don't think he retires as one of the all time greats. I think that's a bit ridiculous actually. Not one of your better takes.

I also don't think he's expected to hit boundaries, a run a ball innings yesterday would've been just perfect. He didn't push it to 300, we didn't even get close to 300. Smith's knock was undeniably more valuable, obviously it was. As much as the game has changed you still need someone at the top who can strike it at 80/90 and have people bat around him/her. We will see in time just how valuable those sort of innings were from Smith. Labuschagne could fill the role but he's been very inconsistent.

So Australia is really in a changing of the guard now. Warner, Smith, Stoinis officially gone. How long have Starc, Hazlewood, Zampa and Maxwell got left?

It will be interesting to see who gets picked moving forward. I wouldn't be surprised to see Starc, Zampa and Hazlewood also call time on ODI.

I think they will go a bit experimental:

1. Head
2. Short/Connolly
3. Marsh
4. Inglis
5. Maxwell
6. Green
7. Carey
8. Cummins
9. Dwarshuis
10. Ellis
11. Sangha

Our backup bowlers held up much better than I expected, I thought it'd be carnage against England and India. Big tick for the systems. Cummins, Ellis, Zampa with everyone else pushing for the last spot still looks strong. Just bring Smith back for the World Cup lol
