Rugby league greats compare Jarryd Hayne to King Wally Lewis
July 25, 2010
Brad Fittler and Wayne Pearce say it is like watching Wally Lewis in his prime, while league Immortal Bob Fulton believes Jarryd Hayne is poised to deliver Parramatta their first premiership in 24 years.
Only three weeks ago, Hayne and the Eels were under siege - now they are firming win the crown after dismantling Canterbury-Bankstown on Friday night.
Hayne-mania was sweeping the code after a performance that drew comparisons to Lewis and Andrew Johns.
It came after he tore apart Penrith in round 19.
"If he stays on the park then the Eels can win the competition," Fulton said.
"But if he is out injured or not playing well, they can't.
"That is the sort of influence he has over this football team.
"Some of the stuff Jarryd did was exceptional."
Balmain legend Pearce compared Hayne to Lewis and Johns after the fullback scored two tries against the Bulldogs, set up one and saved several more.
His tackle on Bulldogs lock David Stagg in the shadows of the corner post to prevent one try was breathtaking.
"He is just one of those guys who has amazing instinct and athletic ability," Pearce said.
"He is like what Joey Johns was to Newcastle (Knights), or what Wally Lewis was to Queensland. If he fires the team wins, and they can go all the way if he keeps it up."
Fittler rated Hayne's first-half rampage against the Bulldogs as one of the best performances he had ever seen.
"I don't know if I ever looked as good as that," Fittler said.
"And I don't know if anyone else did.
"His last two performances have been beauties. It has been a bit like watching Wally Lewis, everyone is just standing back and watching him.
"He is just the package. He has it all. It is up to him what he does now and how good he wants to be."
Hayne's performance reverberated throughout the game on Saturday, with the effects including:
The Eels firming their odds to win the premiership;
Putting Hayne back into the Dally M medal race, with the fullback likely to have scored nine points in the past three weeks; and
Raising anticipation among Eels fans that their fullback will lead another charge to the grand final.
Hayne's performance also has people questioning why it has taken so long for him to step up.
It took a public blast from coach Daniel Anderson and the Eels walking a finals tightrope before Hayne started to produce the stunning form that won him 2010's Dally M.
"A bloke like Billy Slater plays like that every week," said Arthur Beetson, another rugby league Immortal.
"You have to ask why he is doing it now but not before. Did it take a spray from his coach to make him want to play?"
Beetson also slammed Hayne as "precious" for his reaction after Anderson was critical of his performance against Brisbane Broncos.
"It took a blast from the coach to get him playing," Beetson continued.
"He didn't handle that too well and acted a bit precious. He has to start getting some consistency in his game.
"He is brilliant, but he needs to produce it more often.
"He has done it a couple of games, but he wasn't sighted in the second half except for that exceptional tackle."
Despite Beetson's criticism, Hayne is building irresistible momentum and could yet defend his Dally M Medal despite being well behind St George Illawarra fullback Darius Boyd when voting went behind closed doors.
