Horse Racing Thread

It'll get sold to a trainer in the deep south of the USA who will call her simply "White Power".

I reckon its a huge relief that we've a decent bunch of 3yo's this year. The Guineas field yesterday was 100 times the quality of the Guineas in 2007 won by Miss Finland. And I think we'll see some very nice stayers over the carnival as well.

How do you mean by that Jeb? You do know that Haradasun came second in that race?

Shouldn't you be sticking up for Miss Finland Denny? I wouldn't be claiming a victory over Haradahype as too much of an achievement!!

Haradasun finished midfield. Miss Finland beat Casino Prince by a nose from Jokers Wild.

Haradasun came third in the best weight for age race in the country behind El Segundo?

When he ran in the Guineas he was wearing glue-on shoes. He'd be lucky to win a maiden with them on.

Rightio ... let's settle this once and for all :D

- Miss Finland was one of the best 2yo/3yo horses this country has seen. Sure her levels of performance have dropped off over the last 12 months or so, but that shouldn't overshadow what she did early in her career
- Haradasun is one of the most overhyped horses I've ever seen in this country
- Weekend Hussler is a superstar
- Light Fantastic could be a superstar. Not there just yet.

Next topic please

OK these are my opinions on Miss Finland. Read them because this is the last time I am gonna say it, and will not buy into anymore debate over her. Others are welcome to rebutt by all means ;)

- I'll pay that she was a champion 2yo. That's a fair enough case. She still doesn't hold a candle to Dance Hero though, who is the best 2yo this country has ever seen. Bar none.
- It was a great effort to win the Oaks in the same calendar year as she won the Slipper. Kudos to her for that.
- However, as far as the great 3yo's we have seen in Australasia over the last couple of decades, she's got nothing on the likes on Sunline, Octagonal, Nothin' Leica Dane and Mahogany.
- She was made to look better by the shithouse talent in her age group when she was a 3yo. For example, Thousand Guineas she beat Permiscuous, by the nosehair. What the hell is that thing doing these days?? Cadbury Guineas she beat Casino Prince by a nose, who has only won 1 race in the last 2 years. And in her Oaks win, the reality is that the filly that came 2nd only won her maiden 4 days before. Fair enough Tuesday Joy is a talented thing, but that can't be ignored.
- She has failed to run time in every one of her starts. For example, in the Thousand Guineas she was 17.46 lengths off the course record, Oaks 24.96, Cadbury Guineas 10.86 and the list goes on.
- Failed to win an open group 1 race. Can't be a champion.

 Nice response.. except I can't be bothered doing a massive write up. ;)

There is no doubt in the world that she was a champion 2 and 3yr old racehorse, anyone who follows racing will tell you that. She won more than $4.5 million in prizemoney, alot more than most 4yr old mares going around or recently retired. 8-)

I don't know squat about racing, but last year I opened an online betting account for the Melbourne Cup with $30. I ended up breaking even so I've been playing around with $1-2 bets whenever there's racing on tv. It's still sitting around $30 so I thought I'd try something other than win/place, but I have no idea what all those words mean - trifecta, quinella, box somethingorother etc.

I also have no idea how the odds are worked out for these tricky ones..? Help me! :?

Oh and my opinion of Miss Finland is that I like her name. And that white horse is awesome. (This is the extent of my knowledge with which I approach betting.)

I'll start with the easy one - the odds for the tricky ones (exotics) depend on how much is in the pool. That is the total of what has been bet on that event. The more that is in the pool, the more it pays, and obviously if 3 favourites run 1st, 2nd and 3rd in a trifecta it won't pay as much as it would if 3 roughies filled the placings.

Exotic bets include:
Quinella - Pick the first and second horse in any order.
Exacta - Pick the first and second in the correct order.
Any2 - Any 2 of the top 3 placegetters, in any order.
Trifecta - First, second and third in the correct order.
Box trifecta - First, second and third in any order (this one usually costs a fair bit to put on if you want a decent go at it).
First4 - 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in correct order. You can also box them like a box trifecta.
Double - Pick the winner of 2 pre-selected races in the same meeting.
Treble - Pick the winner of 3 pre-selected races in the same meeting.
Quadrella - Pick the winner of 4 pre-selected races in the same meeting.
All-up - Allows you to reinvest your winnings from one race to upto 4 races at the same meeting.

However schmixy, if you are still learning the great art that is punting, I'd stick to win/place bets :)

If you want to have a bet on the Adelaide Cup today, I like #16 LADY ATTIRE as a rough hope.

To translate some of the above into NSW TAB terminology, the Any2 is called a Duet in NSW, the Treble doesn't exist and the Quadrella is called a Quaddie. As well as an Allup you can also take a Parlay which the NSW TAB just changed to make it unecessarily complicated...

Also you can place a Flexi bet for Trifectas, First Fours and Quaddies which in laymans terms means instead of having to pay $24 (per $1) to box 4 horses in a trifecta, you can nominate the amount you want and recieve the appropraite proportion of the dividend. eg. Investing $5 in my example would bring about a 20.83% return on the final dividend.

I as well!! I have no idea why the QLD TAB haven't jumped on this yet.

It has just been introduced as Fractional Betting and only on First 4's and Trifecta's

About bloody time!

Now I'll be able to do my standout 2 or 3 and box 4 or 5 for the place trifectas up there too!
