Horse Racing Thread

Cheers guys, clear as mud :geek: Nah seriously, I'm much better off than I was 3 hours ago - thanks! This will become my reference thread so it better not get deleted or Jebba and Meat will have to retype their entire posts! :P

However schmixy, if you are still learning the great art that is punting, I'd stick to win/place bets :)

I think you might be onto something. I really only do it to add some extra interest to watching the pretty horses run around a track. I'd rather stick around $30 (give or take a few) than lose it all and not have anything to play with anymore.

haha Schmix Like the way you bet ;)

I do know a little about racing and I still only bet by the jockey/driver, horse name or number. And if its paying under $5 I don't bother

BTW Dorothy is racing today
Syd Trots Race 10 No 6

Go DOROTHY [icon_pray.

Well its revealed that Singo and Joey have picked her up for $270000. Pennies to those two, probably just combined what was left in their shirt pockets!

White filly brought by Singo and Andrew Johns
Clinton Payne
Wednesday, 26 March 2008

Magic Millions co-owner John Singleton and rugby league legend Andrew Johns are the proud new owners of the white Zabeel filly sold today at the Magic Millions sale.

The three quarter sister to former Australian horse of the year Might And Power was knocked down for $270,000 after a spirited bidding dual.

“If it was a bay she would have brought $500,000, $600,000 or $800,000,†Singleton said.

“She’s beautiful, there’s nothing wrong with her.â€Â

The horse will be trained by Kris Lees and used in conjunction with a Bluetongue Premium Lager promotion in the Hunter Valley.

“Joey and I’ll run a promotion in all the pubs in Newcastle,†Singleton said.

“We’ll work out the promotion and it will be announced next week.

After purchasing the filly Singleton threw around a few possible racing names.

“We’ll call it White And Power, no we’ll call it Our Bluetongue,†he said.

“The new Brewery will be built in Jillaby so Jillaby will be a good name.â€Â

Kris Lees, holding a bottle of Bluetongue, was quick to point out it was a quality filly.

“She was very typical of the Zabeels the only difference was her colour,†he said.

€œSingo was spot on, if she was a bay she would have brought a lot more for the type she is with her pedigree.â€Â

$270,000 hey? I mean, great deal for the pedigree but jeez it's a lotta cash when you think about it.

My old man, my uncle, my great uncle and grandfather are looking to get in and get a horse in a year or two for a bit of fun to race around the place. My great uncle's actually been a horse trainer (with a few races won in Brisbane along with the Sunny Coast and plenty of country tracks) and worked in the industry for a while, so he knows his stuff. Really considering going in with them - a 5-person syndicate, it'd be heaps fun!

Any of you guys bet on the races in England?
I have just had a very profitable Cheltenham festival and am now turning my attention to the greatest steeplechase the Grand National at Aintree (what a spectacle this race is). I managed to get the winner in 06 and 2nd last year so hoping for more of the same please.

More of a jumps fan than the flat and have had some great days out following the nags.

Don't punt on overseas races as a rule, but love watching the chase events from over in Europe!

I only really punt on the England races when there is an Aussie horse running.

As for $270000 being a lot of money Mick, well all I can say is that compared to what Zabeel's usually sell for its a bit of a bargain [icon_wink

You'll notice that's why I said it was a "great deal", jeb [icon_wink

I mean when you stop reading it as a figure on a screen and realise that this is five years worth of your gross income, it kinda hits home [icon_ee

Some mates from my last work place were in a syndicate...right as the equine flu hit. Poor buggers. [icon_thumbs_do

Poor buggers indeed!

And it can well be a lot of money and stress as Kee said, but it depends on how you work it.

With five or possibly even up to eight or ten guys in the syndicate (depending on how many more join) and just looking at country meets mostly, we've done the maths and it won't be either. My great uncle has awesome contacts in the industry after spending decades working as a trainer and everything else under the sun - it'll really only be a few bob each month for a bit of enjoyment! Keep the nag fit, healthy, trained and well taken care of and let it have a run every now and again!

Don't do it Mick not if you want more guitars.LOL
You'll have no money left.
If you are going to do it make sure your dad runs it then if he knows
what he is doing.

Syndicates are dodgy
Know a couple of people who went in one (the Waughs) got lied to and
robbed you could say. It was in the news.

Gallopers cost about triple to train/race compared to what a pacer/trotter does. But they have triple the prize money :(

Even though they send us broke though I can't imagine not having them. Hubby says get rid of them all the time. One in the
paddock now he wants gone. He is injury prone. I'm gonna give him one more shot.
Maybe I can lease it to you. Its called Karmichael Hunt [icon_lol1.

Yep spot on there LK.We also had many in our syndicate. The bills were never ending.Did the Toowoomba,Sunnycoast,Ipswich runs.
Crooked as hell to when you get into it you will find. [eusa_naugh

My brothers had horses for years. One was a champ. We made heaps on her then she had a foul and she just kept breaking down.He eventually just gave it away.
The other went around the studs in Vic and bought his champs.Never got to see any of them run.Always something wrong with em.Still they have their bets every week but dont own them anymore. They also had MANY more dollars than us but still found it an exi hobbie.

[icon_lol1. Don't you worry, I've heard some horror stories about syndicates. But with at least six family members in it, stabled and trained by my great uncle who is also a part-owner and not going to far flung reaches for a race, it really won't be much coin at all!

So to our experts out there. Tell me, when all are at full fitness, who is the best horse in Australia? Nominees are:

TAKEOVER TARGET

APACHE CAT

WEEKEND HUSSLER

Tough call man, very tough call. Weekend Hussler will be there soon enough imo, but maybe not quite yet...

I'm still happy to run with the Takeover Target on this one, but there's a bees dick in between all four.

I'd have to say Takeover Target too. Close second to Apache Cat though.

Probably love watching Apache win more than any of the others there... he's undoubtedly my personal fave of the lot, but TT is just all class.
