The debate over which is the superior code has raged since 1908; and with the creation of a hybrid set of rules, the debate could soon be answered once and for all.

The hybrid match will be trialled by St Augustines College (Sydney) and Keebra Park HS (Gold Coast) at Brookvale Oval next Wednesday, and former Wallabies fly half Mark Ella, one of the men behind the creation of the rules, believes it can be a success.

-----------

The rules for next week's match centre around the half of the field the attacking team is in.

When the attacking team is in it's own half they will play to rugby league rules, but upon entering the opposition's half they'll switch to rugby union rules.

While it may be a little hard to picture, the game is sure to generate huge interest among both codes and will hopefully serve as a blueprint for future encounters.

Anyone keen to see how this plays out?

The novelty factor means that this could draw attention for exhibition games. Wallabies V Kangaroos could be a big money spinner. All Blacks V the world champion Kiwis. Queensland Reds V Maroons. Etc.

I'm keen to see how it plays out, but it'll be a fail. Essentially they're saying every play is a contest for possession in attack, but not when you're working it out of your own half. Too complicated IMO.

I'd prefer to see a genuine hybrid game.

13 players.
Lineouts for balls that go into touch.
Union scrum (6 forwards however) with differential penalties.
League PTB and 6 tackle sets.
2 point penalties.
5 point tries.
2 point field goals (split the difference).
League kicking rules (ie, regarding going out on the full etc).

love it

I think union players would adapt to league rules better than league players would adapt to uninion rules (line outs, proper scrums, rucks/mauls etc).

Not only this, but when the union team is attacking, they'll be playing their own game, whereas the league team will be playing union. Surely that's a massive advantage to the union team?

League teams don't attack these days anyway so it would be rather moot.

Why can't we all just accept they are 2 different games and no matter what kind of hybrid rules anyone comes up with and the results of any games played under those rules, League supporters will always speak the truth in that ours is a better game; whilst the union supporters will never give up on the delusion that they have the better game.

I actually hate hybrid rules games - I just don't see any point in them at all.

I agree, it'll be a joke like the AFL's so called "internationals".

Well I think we should proactively seek a merged game. League will be swallowed in the next 30 years. At least a hybrid game would help us die on our terms

No doubt it's what should be looked at.

The second Brisbane Bid team are set to announce their names and colours shortly after May 9th, Maybe they will announce red and white with the name "The Brisbane Reds."

Plus we could get Denan Kemp back

Rugby League will never die, the population is always growing so so is the fanbase and the amount of players. I think rugby union in Australia has become less popular over the last 10 years. I really can't stand the game so unless a complete takeover by rugby league happened I wouldn't want a merger
