Couldnt find a thread about this anywhere, but it definitely deserves a mention.

The 22-year-old was lauded ahead of five of the best players in the world - including fellow Storm stars and previous winners, skipper Cameron Smith (2007) and fullback Billy Slater (2008).

No team has ever before had three Golden Boot recipients on its playing list.

Gotta agree he was the best player all season. only hayne got close imo, and that was only for the latter part of the season

Is the golden boot based on how a player peforms in test matches, club matches or both?

Golden boot is rep football only as far as I know, hence why Hayne wasn't even nominated.

That was going to be my next point. If it's club footy too, how can a guy who didn't even come close to winning the award for the best player in his countries game be considered the worlds best player.

If it's rep footy only, then I've got no issues with the deicison.

Is origin counted or only internationals?

I don't even think they count Origin to be honest, I think it is purely internationals.

Just looking back on past winners, consider Lockyer's win in 2003. Broncos were shit, so definitely wasn't his club form that helped. Queensland lost Origin too, though he did play well.

Andy Farrell in 2004....I mean, seriously?

Nothing explicitly states what does and doesn't count, it's nominated by a panel elected by the RLIF...but it seems to be based purely on internationals form.

From what i can tell from reading a few articles, it not purely based on the form during the international matches (obviously it helps tho), its more that only players from the international teams are selected, then the board decides who was the best player all year out of those nominated.

either way, its thoroughly deserved. he tore NSW a new one in the origin and did it again in the quad nations.

I disagree about it being based on international performances only...

When Lockyer won it in 2003, he was still the best bronco out there and was still one of the killers in the competition until he got injured. Awesome game 1 in origin and held his own in the other two games from the FB position. Killer international season as well. 06 speaks for itself.

Generally, it seems (and should) to be based on the whole year's worth of work.

Andy Farrell in 2004 = honestly that was a howler but...

They just didn't want to give it to Lockyer again. He was sublime in the 2004 tri nations final.

So what the hell did Hayne win last week? Didn't he get some International Player of the Year award?

RLIF International Player of the year. Golden Boot comes from some creaky old magazine.

Surely that's based on club form, cause there is no way Hayne did anything special in international rep footy this year

Yeah, I'd say it was an overall award (including ESL players) than a rep award.
