Ivan Cleary Sacked

I'll bet Gould just wants his grubby hands on some of our players.

All joking aside, I genuinely wish Hook the best at Penrith. Things didn't work out at Brisbane, but if he had any positives, he always carried himself with integrity. I don't think it will work out, but worst coaches have been offered second chances, if Gus can address Hook's weaknesses' (eg. player recruitment), Penrith could still contend for the title.

I wonder how many Dolphins players Hook will bring with him?

Loves his Dolphins Hook. I couldn't believe it when the Broncos lost Yow Yeh, Gagai, Beale & Copley for an entire season and Hook's big idea was to replace them with Georgetown, Berryman, Whitchurch and Kemp (who was a Redcliffe affiliate). It was like 2007 all over again...

So in summary

Cleary: I am le tired.
Gould: You are le fired.
Griffin: Break out le KFC.

sorry, mate. I meant the players.

No probs ...

But honestly I'm ok for our players to support hook publicly, despite what they may have been thinking about him as a coach.

Agree. The decent thing to do by any standard.

PHIL Gould says he was concerned about the welfare of his Dally M coach-of-the-year coach Ivan Cleary midway through the season.

He thought he was struggling under the stress of a massive injury toll, losing games and the drawn out negotiations of his assistant coach Trent Barrett to join Manly.

“In the middle of the season I was a bit worried about him,” Gould told The Daily Telegraph on Monday night, “We spoke and I thought he needed a break.

“But Ivan said he was motivated to keep going. He wanted to keep going but we knew things had to improve. We’ve been talking about it for a few months. I just got a gut feel it was the right time.”

The Panthers general manager revealed he conducted his own end-of-season review before coming to the conclusion Cleary had to go.

The Panthers are expected to name former Broncos coach Anthony Griffin as Cleary’s replacement in the next 48 hours once they have reached an agreement on a salary.

“I’ve just finished a review and felt we need to make a change,” Gould said, “There’s no hiding from the fact that he was terminated.

“His contract was up next year anyway and I didn’t want to go through all the business next year of will he or won’t he stay. “It was in our best interests to do it now.

“Ivan was obviously very disappointed but he said he had a feeling this was going to happen.”

Rumours also emerged on Monday night that Cleary had lost the support of a number of key players.

The Panthers have a number of their most outstanding prospects coming off contract next year and the club was anxious to make the coaching move before entering negotiations with the players.

The fact he didn’t act on a number of cases of player ill-discipline was also a reason why Gould acted.

After a highly successful 2014, the Panthers crashed out of contention this year and narrowly avoided finishing with the wooden spoon.

Cleary’s former club, the New Zealand Warriors, on Monday night distanced themselves from re-signing the coach.

Andrew McFadden is under pressure to make an impact with the Warriors, who failed to make the finals this season.

The club has gone on a big signing spree for 2016, snapping up Sydney Roosters fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and South Sydney hooker Issac Luke to form an all-Kiwi spine to complement halfback Shaun Johnson.

“If you are calling re Ivan as you know we already have our coaching staff for next year so Ivan is not heading back to Mt Smart, cheers,” Warriors chief executive Jim Doyle said.

Gus Gould reveals why Panthers coach Ivan Cleary sacked, Anthony Griffin new coach

Best of luck to Hook, he was a good man and carried himself well even when everything else was going to shit. Hopefully he has learnt from his past mistakes, gets a good team around him and is more successful this time around.

Penrith has some exciting outside backs but their forwards leave a bit to be desired. Griffen will have his work cut out for him here because of his defence first approach. His relationship with Wallace will be interested too.

Cleary would be a good fit at the Warriors i reckon he could make that roster sing. He did have a credible record there before going to Penrith as well.

It all seems very, very strange doesn't it! One thing Hook is good at is coaching young players and I can completely understand why Gould has gone with him on that front. If he resists the ridiculous bulking program and learns to let his players play, he has a team ready to contend for the premiership there. This really is make or break for him.

I get the feeling that part of Hooks problem was that he felt he couldn't make the hard decisions against the guys he coached in the 20s. And a big portion of his team was his former u20s.

He won't have that problem at the Panthers

Hook might be perfect. He's certainly not going to go rogue and undermine anything that Gould requests. And while he was seemingly a bit lax with discipline with our players, that can mostly be attributed to his chummy relationship with the previous under 20s players. Going to a new team, with no baggage, I think he could be the perfect coach to keep the boys in line.

If he is going to try to lure some of our boys to Penrith, he can take Glenn.

I'm happy for him to be honest. I can't wait to see how he goes in a new environment.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Hook can do out there at there foot of the mountains.

Hopefully he can get some results quickly, Gus will be there looking over his shoulder at every training session.

Hook will do a good job. He isn't a bad coach. He just didn't have the pulling power that WB does in Brisbane. Very interested to see how it all plays out though. He gets a good roster at Penrith. Better than the one he had here in 2014.

Hook was a terrible coach at the Broncos. I'd hate to see what a bad coach would look like if Griffin wasn't a bad one.
