Jack Bird Discussion

We actually had a bigger pack than the Roosters.

It didn't help.

Bigger? Not really according to nrl.com... A fraction heavier, significantly shorter.

Starting packs:

JWH - 1.92m and 116kgs. Blair - 188cms - 109kgs.

Napa - 1.94m and 109kgs. Thaiday - 181cms - 115kgs.

Friend - 175cms - 92kgs. Hunt - 178cms - 88kgs.

Cordner - 188cms and 103kgs. Gillett - 187cms and 103kgs.

Guerra - 190cms and 103kgs. Glenn - 181cms and 103kgs.

Liu - 187cms and 107kgs. McGuire - 180cms and 104kgs.

Roosters - 630kgs, 11.26m in height. Average - 105kgs, 187cms.

Broncs 622kgs, 10.95m in height. Average - 103kgs, 182cms.

Bench:

Evans - 199cm and 110kgs. Arrow - 189cms and 101kgs.

Taukeiaho - 184cms and 101kgs. Ese'ese - 186cms and 112kgs.

Matterson - 193cms and 103kgs. Offa - 190cm and 112kgs.

Roosters bench forwards - 314kgs, 5.76m. Average - 104kgs, 189cms.

Broncos bench forwards - 325kgs, 5.65m. Average - 108kgs, 188cms.

Broncs overall pack - 947kgs, 16.6m in height. Average - 105kgs, 184cms.

Roosters overall pack - 944kgs, 17.02m in height. Average - 104kgs, 189cms.

Being slightly heavier most certainly didn't help. Neither does having a significantly smaller pair of starting props, whose supposed 'mobility' wasn't seen...

Matterson played in the centres.

I don't see what everyone sees in Bird. Sure he seems like a solid footballer, but watching him week to week, I just see him as an above average footballer - and that's mostly defensively. It could be because he isn't getting much quality ball at the Sharks, but that's all there is to go off.

Hopefully I'm wrong, but I struggle to see the value in him at such a large cost.

Could also be that the culture there has changed since he announced he was leaving. Rumor has it that the players don't talk to him near the same and he is being excluded more now

I can see your point to some degree but he has shown a lot of potential at times, he won rocky of the year, he has ball skills, is a great ball runner, is solid in defence, is very versatile and is ultra competitive.

His last season has been pretty quiet by his standards but the sharks have notoriously under utilised him which is part of the reason he left them.

While I don't see him as a massively necessary or brilliant signing, the thing that excites me about Jack is that he is only 22, and has already played origins and won a gf. Wayne could really push him to his potential.

See, that's my problem I suppose. Hypotheticals/potential. There isn't much proof at this stage. I understand he is badly under-utilised at the Sharks, but even when he does get the ball, I see little more than a backrower charging into the line to be tackled.

Well it's not completely hypothetical. He's a rookie of the year, has played 5 origins, 2 games for county and 1 for th indigenous allstars, and won a grand final all before the age of 22. During this time he has played 5/8, centre, lock, and fullback all with above avarage performances.

That's a pretty good CV at his age.

Not to mention he played most of that grand final with a broken arm, which is pretty good to hear from an attitude perspective.

You just have to look at Origin this year to see his influence. Him coming on for Pearce in Origin one swung the momentum of the game big time.

For 1.65 million a year he better have an influence.

Yes, I understand what you are saying, but CV's don't play on the field.

I don't feel strongly about this, don't get me wrong. In many of the accolades that you mentioned, I just didn't see him have much of an effect. I also don't see him playing constantly "above avg", just solidly.

I hope he brings what everybody hopes that he will, but I fear everyone is building his signing up to be more than what will eventuate. I dearly hope I'm wrong.
Yea I don't feel strongly either. While I am optimistic about the signing and think he will play well, I don't think he was very necessary. I would be far more excited if the money went toward a top tier prop or a good organising half.

I totally agree. I've never had a great opinion of him. Plays tough and is solid but that's about all I've seen so far.

I hope he comes here and kills it but just expecting his usual solid performances.

He's a good player but his contract is massive overs.

Who should we have bought who was off contract at around his price range? Most halves are absolutely terrible yet are on huge money due to desperate clubs.

Someone ( I can't remember) on here the other day made a comment about Hodgos ability to personally drag the team to a victory through sheer aggressive will.
It's probably the difference between the 2015 side and the team that turns up on Friday night, someone that wants to win at all costs.
I see this in Jack Bird. Hard, skilful and plays his guts out.
I don't know the exact figure of deal but I do know what he will bring to the team.
IMO best signing for a long long time.
Just need a weapon of a prop to give the opposition a few nightmares now.
