PLAYER Kotoni Staggs

Remember when commentators were talking up Strange ?
He looked out of his depth when he had to kick on the last tackle because Fogerty ran the ball on the 5th .
Not a passer , not a kicker - not a half .
That kick looked rank... when Fogarty took that hit up it was like "what is he thinking"

Sanders will be the halfback next year, but he better have an elite kicking game, because Fogarty's kicking might be one of those "dont know what you got till it's gone".

In the U19 origin Strange was playing right centre (I think it was right)... also noticed he had a right foot kick.

Haven't paid attention to his carry, but I think the original plan with him was moving to centre when Sanders came of age, but they've lost Fogarty now so hes probably staying in the 6 for the time being

Wasn't that kicked touched?

He kept Strange reasonably contained.

He scored a try but he didn't have as much impact on the game as he has in previous games.
He trampled Strange several times, and Strange only scored when Kotoni was playing Fullback with 11 players, right?

Yeah and Staggs tripped over when he was running across.
I think he was diving, pretending to trip over Klein, in the desperate hope to have the try overturned. It wasn't going to happen, but he went down very easily.

Was just reflecting on how, about a year ago I would still say that Staggs was prone to defensive lapses and hero plays that result in turn overs. Not any more. I think he is close to the best centre in the game and certainly the best centre eligible for Australia

Staggs has been one of the big improvers particularly in the back half of the year since the Parra game.
He's hitting gaps instead of just wanting early ball and trying to use his strength. He is more aware of setting up his winger and gets in to do some hard carries when we need them.
I was one of his biggest detractors because return on investment wasn't there.
Nothing but praise now. His form and effort since certainly rnd 22 has been elite.

That raiders game was incredible. I don't think he took a carry that didn't result in a tackle bust.. It was superhuman!

Yeah, we should all be chuffed I've got nothing to do with retention. I thought the player to hang on to was Cobbo and let Staggs walk lol.

I think his greater awareness to use his winger is actually a result of lining up beside mariner.

Staggs is explosive and quite quick off the mark. Cobbo and arthars were slower to reach top speed so were not always in the right position. Mariner is also quick off the mark and can stick with staggs, making himself an option.
