Live sports betting odds to be banned

the age old question. how much does advertising really impact people's decision making? is it that influential?

I know seeing ads for betting ads don't tempt me. but might they tempt someone else? And will they get themselves in trouble?

ultimately it comes down to personal responsibility. but then, so did smoking, yet that's banned from all advertising.

Do kids really understand the betting? I work in a primary school and the last thing they talk about on a Monday is Tom Waterhouse's odds. All they care about is Barba & Thurston. I think it's an easy catch cry for the people against it to use.

These commercials and segways for various sports betting companies make me swear at the tv for different reasons altogether … I’ve had accounts with most of them in the past and can tell you their friendly façade is giant steaming pile of bullshit.

They promote bonuses and money back options(“if your team leads at halftime and shits the bed we’ll refund your bet” ect) and show shots of punters winning big ect but the reality is, if you’re a winner with these books they will shut you down before you can blink.

There are only two sports books in the world that I trust and have accounts with nowadays because they’re the only ones who don’t limit the bet amounts of their clients and they don’t shut down “sharps” (ie long term winners).

So when I seen an ad for centrebet, sportsbet, sportingbet, et al, I see nothing more than poker machines in disguise, because there’s nothing “sporting” about the way they operate. They want only mugs, losers, suckers, squares to be dazzled by their ads and the illusion of easy money ... and they want to bleed them dry.

I hear odds are $1.10 for the betting ads to be banned.

Primary school? No.

High school? Yes. And we all know how good kids are with money when they turn 18...

Solid point, I didn't think of it that way.

I still think it's a major over-reaction to say it "affects the kids".

Yeah...

It's always the catch cry. But I think it's just as glib to say "problem gamblers aren't going to become more problem gamblers with it". That may be true, but that's also not the point. The point is it's making sports betting more visible and accessible (as any business wants to make their product, I understand that), and I think some of these "bet this and if this happens, get your money back" offers are actually really sinister. It's an attempt to convince the muppet punter that they "Can't lose".

I record most games and watch them the next day and I forward over the ads, so fast food and betting ads, etc. are fine as they can be avoided if you don't like them

But having the odds as part of the telecast means they can't be avoided

I watch these games with my 14yo son and I don't like him being bombarded with betting talk

My wife is a problem gambling counsellor so possibly I am overly sensitive to it though

and muppet punters are no less than about 99% of the punting population. The school children thing is not really the heart of the problem here imo - These ads are aimed at, and tend to hook young blokes in their early 20s who've got incomes. The books make betting look easy and sexy and throw those bullshit 'money back' bonuses in to virtually pass themselves off as being a punter's friend.

As someone who sits in the 1% minority of punters who do win long term (some here will no doubt cry 'bullshit' on that, I couldn't care less) I can vouch for how fucking hard a grind it is and how many kicks in the balls you cop and how long it takes to find the systems and methods and money management dicipline to survive. These commercials paint a completely and utterly false picture of what sports betting is all about.
