Maroons Origin III Squad

Gillett over Taylor is rubbish.

The reason Dave got dropped is cause he didn't live up to expectations cause everyone set high expectations of him. Whereas Gillett has played equally as shit but cause he's had 0 expectations compared to Dave he gets another game.

And before people say "yeah we'll dave didnt play to his potential et al," the point is Dave has a lot more potential to break open a game vs Gillett.

Really disappointed with this call.

Reminds me a lot of Gavin Jones, big fast and skillful but could be intimidated and could go missing in the heat of battle. I think he will be back but he needs to show that he can stand up when things get tough. You have to be able to take then give a bit back and Taylor hasn't really got that raw aggression in him.

Personally I still would have kept Taylor over Gillett because he is in far better club form but Mal hasn't pulled the wrong rein too many times.

Gillett is the utility I guess and that's what saved him IMO. Gillett seems a bit harder as well. Taylor will get more games in the maroon I have no doubt about it.

Totally agree. I have no idea why gillett is there. at his best he is half the player Taylor is at his best. Neither have brought anything to the table this series, so why keep the player that, at best, is not as good as the other. At least with Taylor there is a chance of something awesome!

So there is no chance of something awesome happening if Gillett is at his best?? You are overlooking Gillett's utility value and that would be why he was chosen over Taylor. Also Taylor is a marshmallow

Yeah, you would assume that's the only reason they chose to go Gillett over DT. Here's the official team, not sure if anyone else has posted it somewhere. So looking forward to cuzzie bro Te'O, I reckon minus the brain explosions he could pull off some real bell ringers on the NSW backrowers.

I'm "ok" with the team, would have liked DT for Gillett, but it would have made for a heavy bench and I do see the POTENTIAL utility value of Gillett....mainly because we have Te'O there no to cover his side lol

Glad that's over . On with the game, if we defend like we have in the first 2 games and Cronk gets somewhere near his best, we win.

Gillette is no where near what Taylor is capable of yet, or at least we haven't seen it. If this is the way it's going to pan out then all I can say is that I hope Gillette digs deep and pulls out something special - because I still have a feeling Taylor would. Mal probably has visions of QLD being 4 down with 5 to go and Taylor tries to scoop up a ball in the NSW in goal as opposed to place a hand on it ... and watches as it flies over the dead ball line... all those dropped balls and mind blanks wouldn't have helped last weekend either..

NSW will be happy, every where I read under articles regarding this, NSW fans are rejoicing in the fact that Taylor doesn't look like playing... it's good for NSW now, they don't have the place as many men to handle Taylor on that side and will use the extra man power to shut down Inglis (if they can).

Just Taylor's name being there would have almost been worth it as it opens up opportunities in other areas on the field (as long as he didn't drop the ball every carry)

and looking at that line up Hamm posted.. would have been good to have Taylor in there. When I see that team posted the first thing I think about is Mal will be going for points through the wingers all night.

Yeah, that's exactly what it looks like... Taylor is seriously overrated and Gillett is seriously underrated by most people IMO.

Taylor is a highlight reel player, he can do freakish things without a doubt, but what people tend to forget is that you can't rely on him not to do something stupid. I recall how Benny was filthy at him for the way he scored his first try at the Broncos. Same thing in SOO game 2 this year, with the way he tried to score the try with that dropped ball, ending up making a meal of it.
I basically compare him with Sandow... Lots of talent, little brains, even less reliability = Not made for Origin!

Ýes, Gillett is clearly out of form at the moment, although he was better in his last club game, certainly better than Taylor. Besides, he is better suited for the utility position than any other player in the squad. He is pretty good under the high ball, has better lateral movement and even if he has had a few clangers this season, his defense is generally way less suspect than Taylor's. And anyone trying to say that Taylor is faster than Gillett needs to look again at the latter's pursuit of Justin O'Neill in this year's game against the Storm...

Is that the same try that came about because of Gillette's missed tackle while playing right centre? He did play a better game last weekend, but is he capable of breaking the NSW line? Hopefully he is.

In addition to the lead up to Taylor's removal from this squad, the fact that Stuart pulled Merrin out probably had some influence on Mal's decision also, with the blues only running with two specialist props Mal probably felt he needed a bit more speed on the edges so he can hold the middle tight.

I'm a little surprised by the call to drop Taylor tbh. We have a history of selecting players that are under the pump and they go out and perform massively and often win us the game. I have a feeling this has a 'never to play again' stamp all over Taylor's papers. You can't be critical of the QLD selectors and Mal, they have got us to 6 series in a row. I just think Mal is looking to play a game with very few errors. Te'o is a strong runner and a strong defender. I just hope a Te'o line rush doesn't cost us the game.

so because Gillett once *almost* ran down a centre who had turned half of the engines off, it means hes faster than Taylor?

check out all the highlights in this video:

remember you also claimed that Gillett has the advantage under the high ball "because hes not as heavy" lol. there were 2 or 3 tries from Taylor jumping to catch bombs in there, along with another bomb catch or 2. dont remember Gillett doing that.

from what we've seen from both players, you cannot say that Gillett looks to be the better player. you just cant. Taylor has done things already that Gillett can only hope to do. Gillett has done nothing that Taylor hasnt already shown he can do.

Oh yeah, I remember that. Forgot it was Gillette - he was flying, haha - always hard to tell but unless they have a race. Problem is, can he do that while running at the NSW line, and if he did, would he have as much impact as Taylor? I just hope Gillette's proves he is meant to be there next Wednesday night.

Yeah, that's hard to beat - watching that vid I remember how dirty I felt when Brisbane let him go... Gillette has no real answer to those highlights yet.

Taylor isn't the kind of player to stand up when the pressure is on, any other forward would run hard and tackle hard while he is more likely to try a stupid chip kick dummy through 5 defenders then have a go at a 40/20.

We're better off with this side.

Guys, the Taylor vs. Gillett argument is starting to go around in circles. Why don't we wrap it up.
