Broncos captain Darius Boyd has called for Andrew McCullough to be recognised with representative honours after another outstanding performance from the Brisbane hooker.

McCullough starred in Brisbane's 32-8 win over the Sydney Roosters at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday night, with many seeing the inspirational rake as the man of the match.

The 27-year-old's night included a try, a try assist, 48 tackles and 138 kicking metres, comprehensively outplaying his direct opponent Jake Friend.

Friend has been widely regarded as the replacement in waiting for Queensland hooker Cameron Smith when the Storm rake decides to hang up the boots, but McCullough's form in 2017 says otherwise.

Turning 34 later this year, Smith's years left in a Queensland and Australian jersey are quickly coming to an end and Maroons coach Kevin Walters will soon need to look elsewhere to fill the No.9 jersey.

For Boyd the choice is obvious, with the Australian and Queensland fullback saying that if McCullough were to earn a representative jersey it would be thoroughly deserved.

"The way he plays is inspiring," Boyd said.

"You never have to look over your shoulder because you can trust him every time he's out on the field with you.

"He's always going to do his best for us and whatever team he plays for.

"I know McCullough is a great player and I've known that for a long time.

"It's good to see him playing great footy and a representative jersey wouldn't look out of place for him that's for sure."

Although McCullough's statistics on Thursday night were impressive, there was one act of determination that stole the show.

After already making 41 tackles, McCullough added another one when he latched onto Daniel Tupou to force a pass to Michael Gordon in the 57th minute.

Gordon went through the Broncos' defensive line to make a clean break and looked all but certain to score – enter McCullough.

Brisbane's hooker came from nowhere, outrunning a man much faster than him with want and desire.

Doing his best superman impression, McCullough dived at full stretch to ankle tap Gordon 15 metres from the try line, saving a certain try.

It was an act that coach Wayne Bennett will no doubt refer to as the season goes on, and the master coach was full of praise for his reliable hooker after the match.

"He's playing great footy and that's all you can do. It's the best football I've seen him play since I've been here," Bennett said.

"He's won a couple of player of the match awards already this season.

"On Thursday night he scored a try and set one up for Korbin Sims with a great delay of his pass.

"You see all the tackling he does so he'd have to be tired. The way he chased down the middle of the field and made that ankle tap was just incredible."

McC bench utility for QLD this year? The fact he can alternate as a Lock would be good injury coverage as well. Would be a pretty expedient choice from Kevvie.

Macca in the frame for Origin, who would've thought.

Me. He was always ahead of Friend on a level playing field. Friend would have been more average if he wasn't allowed to pass the ball forward at will.

Macca would be a horrible utility choice. If he keeps up form though, and it's not just a purple patch, he'll definitely be in contention to take Smith's no 9.

Yeah no chance he's a utility lol, they need to provide impact.

I agree that he's at the very least in line with Friend for the QLD 9 jersey after Smith goes, maybe even a nose in front.

I don't see why QLD can't go with a 4 forward bench.

Morgan doesn't change much when he is on the field. We could leave him on the bench and we still perform the same way. And to be honest, he doesn't really do that much anyway.

Defence is everything in Origin. Macca could be a good option on the bench.

Macca would offer nothing as a utility. There's plenty of forwards who are good defenders and can also make metres. Only way Macca gets in as 9 or bench hooker, which we don't need as long as Smith is here.

Me.

I look at Macca and I just think Dallas Johnson.

Offered pretty much **** all in offense, but was an important part of the side because of his defence.

Macca is a better defender than all of the other forwards.

Like Johnson, Macca can provide something to the side that's very valuable in Origin.

I'm biased and selfish tbh......he could be the next Cam Smith and I still don't want him picked for Origin. We lose enough players to it.

McCullough is in better form than every hooker except for Smith. But yet he's in line with friend. Give me a break friend is a shadow of himself lately. This forum seriously needs to get a grip. Impact, what more impact do you want, try saving tackles week in week out, 40/20s, smart dummy half runs behind the ruck. Oh wait you want a athletic superstar? Tell me In all honesty what has Michael Morgan done other than score cherry picker tries for qld?

**** all in offence, he's the Broncos equal top try scorer, has same amount of try assists as both of our halves, more 40/20s than any of our halves? Wait because he's not fast and zippy he isn't an attacking threat HAHAHAHA! Tell that to Cameron smith

So would you have him in the 17, Taylor?

Or are you just going to snipe at others for having a conflicting opinion?

1. He is not the Broncos equal top try scorer at all.

McCullough has 2 tries. Roberts has 4.

2. He doesn't have the same amount of try assists as our halves.

McCullough has 1 try assist. Milford has 3. Hunt has 2.

3. He actually hasn't kicked a 40/20.

That 40/20 everyone thinks he kicked? He didn't get credited for a 40/20 because the player touched it before it went out. So it didn't count.

Hunt has 1.

He and Friend offer zilch in attack. I hope we get some other emerging hookers who can do both, like Smith.

Sorry, but I'm just sick of you fellas bashing our players all the time. McCullough is the easily the second best hooker in the game. But according to yous he has slow service doesn't deserve rep jersey, is not an attacking player. I'm sorry but it does mine and other members heads in.

The Broncos are terrible when Macca isn't in the lineup. I hope he never gets picked for Origin. Note: I am a big fan of club level as far as RL goes, I find the rep stuff boring.
