Coates and Herbie have improved their biggest shortcomings since leaving. Coates was excellent at leaping athletically and dropping the ball. He had a poor carry out of trouble. Now he is a real aerial threat because he’s catching the ball from those athletic leaps. And his tough carries are excellent for a tall, lanky man.

Herbie’s biggest shortcoming for years has been his inability to find his winger when there’s been an overlap. He seemed perfectly capable of it this year.

Broncos broke Dearden, thankfully he was able to find a coach who simplified his game and now he’s one of the game’s elite running halves.

Sure it’s only three examples, but when those three have gone on to become amongst the best players in their positions it’s pretty damning.

Dearden was very young. Hard to say he wouldn't improve from that age. We knew his talent and he has developed well but as a running half. I get why we moved him on. We needed an experienced game manging half at the time.

Herbie developed a lot while here and Coates left quickly. I would have expected them to kick on based on the experience they have now got either here or at their new clubs.

I don't watch much of most of them but guys like Mitch Moses, Payne Haas, Angus Critchon and Spencer Lenui even Lomax played some of the best footy I've seen from them in origin under Madge. Knew their jobs and put 100% into doing that.
Another thing that stands out is game 1 when QLD were playing against 12, Cobbo and Co were tearing the left edge apart he moved Stephen Critchon to that side and that put a stop to that pretty quick.

The tigers got rid of madge after a review completed by Tim sheens (who the club had previously canned, and just finished up with in remeditation regarding payout).

Tim sheens' recommendation was to get rid of madge and replace him with. . . . Tim sheens! With the plan for sheens for a few years to hand over to Marshall who has no prior senior coaching experience. And this plan did not even withstand with sheens going early again.

Sure he came through the ranks and made the position his own. But we got Reynolds for Dearden and the money he would have got at the time. I still think that was the right move. Dearden relies on Clifford/Townsend for the kicking

That is the thing stopping him from playing #7 his long kicks . But FMD some how Alfie learnt to kick long .

The biggest frustration for me this year and even in 2023 was the consistent praise for our high risk/high error rate, rocks or diamonds type footy. From Billy Slater saying 'we just want Reece Walsh to be Reece Walsh (i.e. throw your hail mary passes)' to regular commentary about 'who cares how many errors they makes that's just their style of footy'.

I'm hopeful one of the first thing Madge walks in and says is if anyone throws a hail mary before tackle 5, kicks before tackle 4 or gets dragged over the sideline that he'll personally walk onto the field and bitch slap them. Completion rates has to be a focus. We need to be able to rely on our structure and attacking system to score 80% of our points and not need to throw a 20 meter pass cutting out 3 players.

There was a play in the grand final last year where after we had absorbed all sorts of pressure and i think it was still nill all, we got our first chance to attack their line. And from memory it was tackle 3 or 4 and we threw a pretty low % play that saw Jessie Authurs get bundled into touch. It doesn't matter what type of attacking weapons you have, you still need to build pressure.

If we can be diciplined next year and be ultra fit i think thats a big step towards a top 4 finish. A good pre season is critical so i hope we've given Madge enough time to get his ducks in a row ready to rip in.

These days alfie would not score as many tries as he would be taken out from chasing his chips and grubbers.

Back then it was always intersting because you had Alfie who had the short kicking game and running game, and played Stuart who was the opposite and had the long kicking game and long passes.

Which players have improved since leaving the club other than Dearden and arguably Farnworth? Dearden was always going to be good but needed to get out of our dumpster fire at the time to do so. Farnworth was already great last year and has probably just been recognised for it more this year. Isaako was always a good winger but terrible fullback. Palasia, Capewell and Fifita haven’t really improved. Tanah Boyd has played NRL but not consistently. Gamble is the same. Coates has improved but he’s under Bellamy, who doesn’t improve under Bellamy? Flegs is quite likely finished.
