NEWS MIlford wants $600k

Brisbane Broncos marquee signing Anthony Milford called Kevin Walters into his office on Wednesday to talk about their relationship. Milf is apparently touting his arse around other clubs at $600,000 a pop and is keen to know whether the Broncos might still want a piece of it. The Titans might be interested but won't go higher than $400k.

Official word is the club is still dithering but our spies reveal Milford's name does not appear on the 2022 secret roster locked away in Donut's safe. Instead Kotoni Staggs and Adam Reynolds are penciled in at 6 and 7, and yet another Anthony's arse will find itself out on its arse come season end.

Milford particularly took umbrage at being railroaded for his part in Brisbane’s 50-6 drubbing last round. While he accepts his form is a tad "below par" he felt the buck should stop with the forwards who failed to match Manly's pack. As a reward, Souths Logan will enjoy the $1 Million signing's trademark snooze and bombfest this weekend.

Walters confirmed the meeting, and said:

“Milf and I have had a discussion and he is aware of what he needs to work on. It’s not the end. It’s up to Anthony, he makes that decision on his future, not me. I keep saying Anthony has control of his career, not the Broncos or this football club."

“Right now is the time for him to perform, when he went back last time to the Intrust Super Cup he performed well, so we expect him to do the same. There’s lot of parts in his game that need work and he will go back and work on that in the Intrust Super Cup. We have a clear picture on where we are going and how we are going about it.”

Breaking up the band

Broncos skipper Alex Glenn said :

“The reality of it is if ‘Milf’ wasn’t on a million dollars, he wouldn’t be getting dropped. That’s the reality I feel. The pay packet definitely puts pressure on him, his name and his future in the game. That is something Milf is struggling with – blocking out that pressure. We shouldn’t put too much pressure on him because of his pay packet. In order for him to get back to playing his best footy, he needs to find the love of why he started playing again.”

“Change (leaving to another club) is never a bad thing, it challenges you to go out of your comfort zone. I’d love to see him stay at the Broncos, but if change is part of his future I don’t see it being a bad thing for him. Milf plays his best when he is free … he needs to find the love in footy again.”

Not convinced he'd make it through a pre-season down in Melbourne.

Tigers are a perfect fit. Coast along on a big contract and no expectation of being any good. He's basically a Mbye clone.

Thats the one thing with Melbourne, if he doesnt commit he wont achieve anything. Its the point i've probably been badly trying to make. I dont think he is a lazy trainer, as he has said, he isnt the best trainer. I think his mindset is he just does what he has to do and no more than that. Thats what holds him back.

Our 2 best performances this season have been games following him being dropped to the QLD Cup (Penrith and Sydney)

The Tigers will be probably looking at him but as it's been said, that club is a place that lazy players tend to end up. Look what happened to Adam Blair, he was one of the best forwards in the game until he signed a big deal at that club.

That sounds pretty lazy to me.

Blair wasn’t lazy at the Tigers. In fact he paid other players out of his own pocket to train with him on their days off. He’s never been a big stat player, his bread and butter was the intangibles of the game and he wasn’t being played to his strengths.

How much do we pay Albert Kelly? Whatever it is, we should only offer Milford $100k less than that

That sounds pretty lazy to me.

I really dont think he is in terms of training. Whenever i've watched him he's like a bloke who goes to work in a job he doesnt like. Goes in, does what he has to then goes home. Its like @Jason Simmons said, he got away with it in a better side because of his natural ability. He hasnt changed things up to improve. He keeps training the way he always has and he thinks its enough when it isnt. I can see why people think its laziness tbf.

The thing i always think of with Milf ( and other players who have been given huge contracts ) is a quote from former England manager Sir Bobby Robson when he got asked about some of the biggest problems he was finding English football. He said " How do you make a rich man sweat " referring to the massive salaries they get in the Premier League. I reckon once some of these blokes set themselves up for life they lose their drive to go that extra mile, but thats probably something Milf has never had.

Yeah I get what you’re saying. I think Marvin Hagler said "it’s hard to get out of bed to go for a run in the morning when you're sleeping in silk sheets"

But ultimately if you have a job and you are just doing the bare minimum and you aren’t producing results then you need to try harder - if not than that is being lazy.

TBH, for most people a jobs a job. You just go in, do your work and come home, thats the way lots of people work. They dont go in and bust their guts every day and do extras. Some do if they are really striving for something, but your average worker i'd say just goes in and does what they need to do then goes home. To me, thats what Milf is, an average footy player now. He doesnt want to put in the extras to achieve more.

I've said this before about the playing group when people where carrying on about Boyd not trying. If you have a player not putting the effort in or deliberately not trying, they wont last long. Coaches see it, but the players are the ones who will put you on the outer. I'll still maintain Milf isnt as lazy as people think he is or he wouldnt get the time of day with the group, he is just wasting his talent because he wont push himself. Be interesting to see if it makes any difference once he isnt getting his one million dollars a year.

The difference is footy isn't a job, you don't play to get paid, you play because you simply love the sport.
And anyone who loves playing their sport, wants to be better at it.
The fact that you find yourself getting paid to play the sport you love, makes you one of the luckiest people on earth.
The problem we have is there actually folks there who think playing footy is their job.

Sorry to tell you but for a significant amount of sportsmen it is a job like any other.

Some people do get dragged down by it. They can be extremely lucky to be well paid for playing footy, but there are plenty who dont get that either and who are basically playing year to year for a contract that only just lets them live. Some players just fall out of love with the sport sadly.

I'm thinking of asking my employer for 600k this week because I didn't do half of my work last week and so I think they'll be all good with it.

I think MILF has lost a couple of gears in his natural speed after several hamstring injuries. You never see him in full flight anymore.
