Stats rarely reflect a dummy halves value. I thought Turpin was pretty solid, caused a couple of turn-overs in defence, did well to collect a charge down from the Cowboys that swung the early momentum back in the Broncos favour.



It's fair to expect more out of a player who has played 239 more NRL games at dummy half.

No, it just shows the hypocrisy. Poor performance is poor performance no matter how you dress it up. Not that i'm saying Turpin was poor either, he just actually put in a very Macca like, defensive performance.

It shows that fans are willing to give inexperienced players more time, especially when they didn't do a whole lot wrong in difficult conditions.

Still hypocritical in my book. It also depends on who the player is as well. Coates seems to get a fair bit more criticism than say Herbie does at the moment despite them being very similar in terms or NRL experience. Also not every occasion a player plays poorly is down to if they have played 20 games or 200, could just be they didnt play very well. Its just knowing if the inexperience is the cause of mistakes and poor displays or if its just a player hasn't played well.

Myself, i dont expect perfection and consistency from these younger guys, they are still learning and you do have to give them a little leeway. Even Patty, who is the closest thing to perfection that exists, has had ordinary games. I just dont think its the end of the world to come out and say a player has had a bad game.

Must admit, i'm not happy with that comment from Seibold about Boyd. If he earns it, then fair enough, but we still have another trial game to go yet. A lot can happen. He could well have a stinker.

I think team metres per set would be an interesting statistic when comparing Macca vs Turps. The forwards seem to get a better roll on with Turps at dummy half.

I just don't think you understand why fans are so critical of McCullough and why they want changes at 9.

Honestly, Turpin could be just as shit and it wouldn't bother me as long as he got turfed in a few months instead of being given 10 years.

It's not actually Macca himself that bothers me, great clubman, great bloke, great attitude, shit player. It's the club/successive coaches who have persisted with him and never looked to sign someone better in 10 years of mediocrity in arguably the most or top 3 most important position on the field.

Maybe the forwards make a little sense, simply because we've already run out of top-30 options, but if Niu and Gamble can't be picked until July what value is there taking away minutes from top 30 players who are supposedly competing for round 1 spots?

Agreed, he is a bog average player that has been untouchable and treated like a superstar.

I’m sure him being a good bloke who trains hard is a big part of it, but FMD, when for a decade or more he has been cod ordinary and no coach has even really considered going with anyone else til now, you wonder what is going on?

Why did we try to sign Cameron Smith, if Macca is so good? If he is not as most people believe, are we honestly saying we could not have found a better hooker in more than 10 years?

Seibold addresses Glenn's injury and Bird's RED HOT CRACK in today's Courier Mail.

“Alex definitely won’t play this week. He had a scan yesterday and we will know where it’s at. He is walking around and looks OK but we don’t want to take any risks at this time of year. He tweaked it attempting to score a try but we’re hopeful he will be right for round one. With any hammy you get the relevant scan so we will know more after seeing the results. I’m confident Alex won’t miss round one. He’s had a disrupted pre-season with his hammy so we won’t risk him this weekend. I will name a large squad for this trial. I will finish the game with some of our younger players, most of our senior guys have had good minutes in the pre-season.”

“Jack is going to start again. I’ve been really happy with him, particularly defensively. A lot of people don’t see what fullbacks do in defence. He has worked really hard and is really good at organising the defensive splits and line defence. We’ll get another look at him this weekend.

“On the other side, Jamayne is very athletically gifted and brings a lot of qualities. It is a really tough competition. Both players have shown some good signs, but Birdy is going to start again this week. Definitely, he has been tremendous. It’s like having a new recruit in some ways, a quality new recruit who has won a premiership and played Origin. He’s played limited games the last couple of years. He would probably say that physically he was below his best the last two years, but that was in some way because of the injuries he’s had. I’m really happy with how he’s trained. Physically he looks great. He’s got a really good energy to him at the moment and is in a really positive frame of mind."

It will be interesting to see if Macca spends time on the field this weekend while Turpin is still out there at dummy half. I have a feeling he could be used as a middle reserve as well as cover for Turpin when he goes off. It would allow Seibold to pick a specialist outside back on the bench as well.

Same. I'm not at all excited for Isaako to be fullback, Bird on the other hand, could give us a new dimension in attack and is a huge body in defence who loves the contact and has the confidence to actually lead the team from the back.

While he hasn't played much at fullback there are a few things i like about having bird there. Firstly a bigger body bringing it back from kick returns who has the ability to bend the line. Imagine him kick returning followed by oates poking his nose through then the forwards take over. Its much better then boyds ten meter kick return and slow play the ball. The second thing is anyone who rates jack bird says you just have to get the ball in his hands because he can just make things happen. Fullback gets his hands on the ball plenty. Not saying he'll be successful there but given our options im excited to give him a shot.

still faster than Boyd. someone had to say it.

I remember watching bird in the u20’s where he was named at lock for the dragons but got moved to fullback before kick off and he absolutely destroyed our u20’s, it was one of the most dominant Individual performances I had seen.

Having said that he’s never been overly fast and coming off an ACL it can’t help, he would have to rely on his football brain to give him an edge but perhaps we will struggle with sweep plays to get that 3 on 2 advantage
