Can't do much when their pack is rubbish and offers no go forward.

Can definitely do a lot better, hopefully for your lots it's just a bad week at work. It's going to be a boring year if it's just Penrith dominating again.

Cherry Evans has been trying all night........................must have missed the first half.........

Billy Smith has been impressive tonight with his ball running and defence, hasn't made a mention with the commentary team though.

I'm certainly not writing the Sea Eagles off just yet but if they're going to improve on 2021 then they're going to have to re-think their style.

They've fallen into the trap the Bulldogs did under Des where they're constantly relying on middle forwards to be ball-players. In this case it's Jake and the issue is they don't have the go-forward to play expansive football. So Jake is often forcing passes, the defence screams in on the defender, wins the ruck and it just creates all this angst among the playmakers who are trying to force plays instead of playing to the odds. Then you throw Walker into the mix and I think Dylan at times does what's best for himself and not the players around him.

Again, the loss of Schuster can't be underestimated here since he gives them an extra dimension down that left, but if they adjust their engine room and get moving forward it'll make life so much easier. I don't think it's lost on Sea Eagles supporters that once Davey came on, a natural edge forward, the Sea Eagles started to make more inroads.

Even so, territory is so important and their exit sets just leave so much to be desired. Saab really needs to run with more purpose and position his body better. He doesn't play tough enough and both Sydney and Panthers exposed him pretty badly. I'm not sold on their centres either and they really need more improvement out of them, Harper especially seems to trash around and just makes life harder for his own team mates.

I'd argue that along with this, the biggest problem I saw tonight was laziness in defense and a lack of awareness to number up. They kept getting caught short either on the outside or by the inside guy not tracking the play.

Very astute summation.
The inclusion of Davey will strengthen our forwards and when The Shoe returns he'll improve our attack. Hopefully Al will give us more grunt in the front row.
Bully, to me, should be on the bench.

Talking 'bout my g-g-generation

Aloiai really owes Manly a big season this year. Came to the club following a controversial exit from Wests and just struggled to play consistent football through out. If him and Taupau pull their finger out and Des re-evaluates Jake's role it would make a big difference to the team.

Still if I'm a Sea Eagles supporter I'd take some solace out of the performance from Olakau'atu. No doubt he was underdone last week and he still had some moments tonight, but it appeared in the second half he may have turned a corner. If I'm Des, I'm revving him up big-time for next week's game because he's become one of his best weapons.

Walker's gotta play in the middle for us.

Curran looks a gun at lock though and can play big minutes.... doesnt seem wise to be playing Walker for only 20-30mins a game.

Also Walker never passes it... it comes off for him sometimes to just run it, but he'll go games where his running game is completely shut down and will still refuse to pass it

Following on from your first post I was going to say that the Manly middle looks really poor at the moment and if Aloiai was in reserve grade or injured.

I think Bull has looked in all sorts in defence out on the edge and Davey thoroughly outplayed him.

The only middle earning his wage at the moment, in terms of go forward, is Paseka... but I think Bull will be much better when he's moved backed to the middle and providing impact off the bench.

It's definitely eased matters, but I still think it's too difficult to flip momentum in the current game. The removal of the scrum has just made the modern game to a slog and if the referee puts the whistle away like he did for Penrith last week it's game over.

What we saw in the Melbourne/Souths game is what happens when the referee actually gets involved. It made for a better finish, but you're never going to see that consistently because eventually you'll rub one set of fans the wrong way and set your career back. It's why most referees pretty much do everything to avoid making the call and let the bunker arrive to those decisions.

Speaking of, I still think it's bizarre that last week the bunker wouldn't review the goal line drop out against Manly but tonight we had the bunker overruling itself over Harper. It's weird how the bunker picks and chooses with those goal line drop-outs, because they clearly have the capacity to review those without needing a challenge.

I think the penalty that results in play being stopped has definitely reduced the blowouts

Last night and tonight I reckon if those were games last year they're 50 point blowouts
I think one of the big impacts will be on the defensive line speed when you're stuck inside your own 30m.

There was an instance tonight in the roosters vs manly game. Keppie came out of the line and put a big hit on... last year that's one extra tackle, but it's an instant momentum creator and riles up the defensive line who then keep coming at the opposition trying to ruck it out with one out hitups.

Last year they wouldnt care if they conceded another 6 again in that instance, because they just get to keep rushing up and belting the runners. There was literally no advantage to the attacking team who just have to keep rucking it up and getting belted until the ref forced them to a last tackle kick.

Tonight the Keppie hit is a penalty, play is stopped for the kick to touch, roosters get to huddle up and regroup plus they have field position in attacking territory.

Any sort of momentum that Keppie was trying to get by rushing out of the line was instantly lost.

I'm ok with that because last year it was ridiculous... teams literally couldn't get out of their own half and teams like Parra spent 2yr being offside on every tackle and never getting punished

They started off really slow last year too though. They have too many good players not to make the 8.
That’s what us Warriors fans think every year as well…

Yeah but the rest of us balance out your insanity hehe

Campbell is tiny.

edit: and that's where being small hurts you.
He is quick as all heck, but under a bomb on the line, its easy to drag him back in goal.
