CROSS FORUM NRL 2022 Round 9 Discussion

Im still not convinced about the cows, only solid team they have come against is the eels, which can have a shocker. they lost pretty convincingly to the roosters as well
Yep, ridiculously cruisy draw to start the sesson as per usual too.

Gotta beat whats put in fron of you though, so kudos to them for picking up wins but I think when they eventually get to a tougher patch of their draw, they'll lose a few.

So who is first coach sacked? I think we have a three horse race:

1. O'Brien
2. Barrett
3. Holbrook

O'Brien has to be odds on surely.

Honestly what is going on at Newcastle?
Heavy injury toll and a spine that is different almost every game due to poor form, injury etc. Very low on confidence atm as well. The arrival of veterans such as Milford and Nikorima will help immensely but it will be too late. No post season action this year.

Isn't Niko going to Souths??

Cutting the post game coverage to go to dog racing, fucking disgraceful.

One of the reasons the AFL is so much better. I mean they still have gambling ads but hardly compared to the NRL's 1 and a half out of every 2.

How bad are the penalties for arguing with the ref or flinching off the mark tho. Argh!

What was Lachlan doing, Mick?

What the **** was Ponga doing? That was his responsibility and he just stood and watched.

Great leadership from the captain.
Has Ennis mentioned that he’s extremely disappointed yet???
Because that’s all I can recall him saying about the broncos of 2020... and he’s a novacastrian so I would imagine he would be doubly disappointed at the moment

Payten pissing and moaning in a presser again... he’s lucky he fell in the lap of a NSWRL golden child...or maybe he knew that was the case and that’s why he didn’t want anything to do with the NZ gig

Look, at least you get a point for missing between the uprights.

You mean the coverage is better. The actual game is barely a sport.

On second thoughts, T The Don, stay wherever you are and order stronger alcohol.
Yeah... it's been a bludger few weeks. Been snowed under at uni though so had a general apathy towards the NRL lately thank the lord. Betting on your games have been the highlight of my weekends.

Jokes on you all though, guess who's currently on the top of the ladder in the Sapphire Series netball baby?! Yessir up the Titans.

Frustrated Fuck My Life GIF

I never thought the day would come that I would say I'm excited to see what 32 year old Kieran Foran can do... Have a better weekend/mothers day than me ladies and gents.

I was being facetious in suggesting that Holbrook embarked on a 3yr journey to get Will Smith as his 6.... but I have previously suggested that hastily releasing Fogarty was a mistake.

They anointed him captain and I thought he was solid enough at getting them around the park to reduce pressure on the rest of the young guys in the spine.

Instead they went all in on the young spine talent... which is expected because U20's arent allowed to develop in the current NRL climate.

Titans were basically forced into this situation, because they had too much young talent come through at the same time.

They went all in on Sexton who played his first year of ISC last year... and then went all in on Campbell, by moving Brimson to 6.

They basically had to or potentially watch them head to a different club.

The issue they'll have moving forward is how to develop these guys and also retain them.

Their cap is loaded with forwards, so how do they expect to retain Sexton and Campbell when they're next off contract... whilst also finding any viable 9. They have Bryant coming through, but then they'll have to retain him as well.

The way the NRL salary cap is setup at the moment doesnt allow proper development.

Young players dont want to do an apprenticeship in lower grades and bide their time... they want cash and if they get the cash then the coach has to play them... because they're taking up top 30 spots and first team money.

The titans have had to take the punt on an U20's spine and it is backfiring spectacularly.

Until the NSWRL changes its approach to development clubs there will be many more tales of NRL teams banking on youth and failing
I'm not sure if they were necessarily 'forced' into this situation. I believe they could have kept Fogarty around if they wanted to but they believed that Campbell-Brimson-Sexton was the best combination moving forward. Since the Raiders offered Fogarty more long term security, the Gold Coast chose to do right by him.

I don't necessarily think they were wrong to let Fogarty go. Jamal had shown time and time again that he lacked leadership and would often come up with bone-head plays when the team needed him most. The issue is that instead of signing a like for like replacement they went and signed Will Smith.

It highlights the poor job they've done with Tanah Boyd who went over to the Gold Coast for the opportunity. They lured him over they've shifted him from dummy half to the halves consistently and he's never found his footing as a result. Tanah was one of the most promising players coming through and he's gone backwards since leaving the Broncos.

I think their view is that Campbell-Brimson-Sexton with Smith, Turner, Boyd as back-up options and Tom Weaver as the fallback option if that combination hits it's ceiling too soon. The issue is, Weaver suffered an injury and has barely played this season, so that's a lot of expectation on somebody who hasn't shown much outside of U/18s.

In fairness to them, they've only had the Campbell-Brimson-Sexton combo on the field twice and it resulted in a close win and a close loss. Unfortunately Jayden suffered that rib injury and he's struggling to play through it currently. Last year he was genuinely one of the best players in QCup when he got the opportunity and made the most of it. This year he's struggling to make the same impact.

Getting them on the field would be a major priority, but they also need to change the composition of the team. I'm looking for some dramatic changes from Holbrook, the team is looking very stale and I think they need to inject some fresh blood and change some of their structures around. For me there's still too much play being set up around Brian Kelly who looks injured and isn't talented enough to trouble most teams.

Definitely not as convincing as last week, but a solid enough win for the Cowboys.

I think it would have been easy for them to come into the game and expect it just to happen. That was the type of mentality the Eels had against the Tigers and we all saw what happened there. To an extent we did see a bit of that in the first half, but come the second the Cowboys focused on getting through their sets and while there was an element of luck to their play they did well to put themselves in that position.

He's done a really good job Payten. It's one thing to blood a bunch of rookies and say job done it's another to get them playing the way Payten has. Nanai, Luki, Neame, Cotter etc. are weapons and Todd has done a tremendous job of selling them the importance of competing on every play. They'll get it wrong from time and time but he's coached the right mentality into them and if they can keep it up they could be anything.

I thought the Knights were pretty brave. Nobody rated them a chance and they gave a good account of themselves. I thought the returns of Fitzgibbon and Young made a difference to the team and the Knights didn't miss their halves as much as they should have been entitled to. I thought that was Crossland's best game this season and Hoy had some good touches as well.

They had some solid moments but like a lot of struggling teams they just clocked off at bad times. That effort on Taulagi was just really poor and then to concede 70 odd metres the next set really hurt them. I think from that point on it was always going to be too difficult for them and to lose Edrick Lee and Jack Johns in the one set was just a bridge too far. In the end, they were probably fortunate not to concede 50.

Looking at their draw, they really ought to make Top 4 this season.

It looks like you'll get your wish.

Holbrook has said he's going to make changes for Magic Round.
