CROSS FORUM NRL 2023 Round 8 Discussion

I was listening to a Superleague podcast ( i'll try to find which one it was and link it ) and apparently last year because of players staying down there was a behind closed doors meeting with the RFL and the teams and they basically got told if diving carried on into this year players were going to be taken off for 5 mins and it would be classed as an interchange if the injury wasnt legit. Dont know how they were going to police that, but there has been very little diving this year so far.
Exactly ... there's no way a halfback or important spine member is going to lie down early on if it means he's off the field for 5-10mins and costing his team.

They'll do it if it's absolutely necessary to get their team the win, but they're not doing it 3mins into the game like what's happening at the moment

Having the risk of it actually costing an interchange as well is massive.

Also they should still be sent to the injury bin even if it's not a penalty... so it becomes a lottery if they get a penalty or not in the first place, but they still go to an injury bin regardless.

The issue to me at the moment is the ref so quickly paying the penalty... there's no deterrent to diving at all.

Players aren't even being sent for HIA's and are still getting the penalty anyway.

They said at the start of the year they'd only be paying penalties if they were reportable offenses, which was already the rule... and they don't even enforce it, because they pay everything... so they've dropped the same rule again already

On the Tom Turbo question. Leave him out of the team until about round 24 so he can properly heal.

Bring him back just before the playoffs.

Yous got what you wanted.

Sadly, it’s a far better comp to watch these days. Big hits get rewarded, not penalised. Dives aren’t accepted as much and the crowds are better. Sure the standard is ‘lower’ but decisions are far less of a lottery. And the commentators are so much better.

Tbf, They still have the issue at the moment similar to the NRL where some of the bans are decided by the seriousness of the injury.

Wonder if he's tried to change his running style to avoid another hamstring injury and jn doing so created another issue?

Luke Metcalf at warriors atm is going through something kind of similar where he's done his hamstring a few times now so they're trying to adjust his running style so it doesn't keep happening

Apparently for Turbo it`s his side steps that wreck his hammies .
And only on one side .

Annercelery has said the outcome of a hip drop is important - there you have it - the NRL are admitting they make their judgments based on injury, every player has just been given even more of a licence to dive.

Is it really so much to ask to have some competent people in NRL officialdom?

I thought Paix milked it by grabbing his knee when the Para player fell on his leg . He seemed fine once the whistle was blown .

TMM breaks a leg in a hip drop… crickets…

Smash em bro

Are you sure it was a hip drop ?
I remember watching it at the time and it seemed pretty innocuous .
Next thing he`s off with a broken leg .

Agreed, I hate diving with a passion, especially when my own team does it but this is what awful officialdom has led to.

That’s not what happened at all, in fact it was basically the opposite. He grabbed the back of his leg (not his knee) for a second but got straight up and played the ball. The ref blew the penalty into the next play.

Good thing Paix didn’t dive then.

That wasn't his point in that instance.

The point was where the player lands. So for instance there was a tackle in the game where Flegler had a hold of Paulo, swung his body into Paulo but his hip was already on the ground when he made contact with Paulo's body, hence it wasn't a hip drop.

Later on he did elaborate that the MRC take injuries into consideration and whether the MRC feels the player was fairly punished on the field.

I'm still unsure how the Hopgood one received a lighter charge.

He has a metal plate for life in his leg and can’t play rugby for 3 months. Nothing innocuous about it.

What was innocuous was what started this whole thing which was the sib-inning of Nuikora and suspensions for 2 weeks for something that wasn’t a hip drop.

So it hurts even more as a warriors supporter when the game does something wrong and nothing at all.
