No idea if a sporting organisation is different , but it's standard practice for any professional organisation to write into its constitution a maximum term for the Chair of any Board. It is an attempt to keep things fresh, new ideas, etc. Usually there is a maximum term for anyone serving on the Board, not just the Chair.

It actually could be a valid theory as to why he did something so stupid? “oh well my time here is nearly done,won’t matter if I do this“ kind of thing.

personally I think police should probably take a closer look at anyone that tries to defend behaviours like what Brett finch was doing. It would take a morally bankrupt person to believe that finch should be doing anything but the hardest time a judge can throw at him.

It’s actually quite interesting they called themselves the thunderbolts, I had no idea until now. Albury is known as the thunder but is just on the nsw side of the border. They are probably the closest town(actually a very small city technically) to Melbourne that could be described as having a rugby league following.In 2020 they (or albury city council according to reports) did not allow Melbourne to train at their grounds while they were staying there during the Covid bubble.


I wonder if the reason not published or discussed is that possibly the thunder were pissed off with their brand being imitated in an attempt to have fans perceive that they were a part of the storm system. Anyway while checking it out found an article from last year that said that they had signed an agreement with each other, I cauldnt read it as it’s subscriber only but found this propaganda piece from the storm homepage published just after the deal was made.

would anyone put it past Melbourne to do something as slimy as try to hoodwink people in the Deep South of NSW into thinking that their local team was actually a part of the Victorian system? Is it now a case of “mission accomplished, we have them onboard” and we will rebrand now the job is done? Would Melbourne actually do that? Someone please tell me no…….

It looks very, very suspicious to me.
 
And to add to all of what I just posted if there’s anything to my theory the whole fucking scheme has one big rotten fucking cherry on top.

To close the saga out they have actually publicly celebrated and marketed their successful intrusion into NSW feeder territory with the story being they are doing their absolute best to grow the game in Victoria. Am I joining dots that aren’t there? Would the storm do that?

Just took them 25 years to address the problem.
 
Dean Ritchie (yeah i know) is reporting that the clubs have become frustrated with Abdo and are preparing to assemble a "high powered lobby group" to negotiate directly with Vlandys in a bid to try and end the stalemate over the new CBA

there will be a private zoom call tomorrow morning to discuss sending three "influential" chairman; Nick Politis (Roosters), Matt Tripp (Storm) and Karl Morris (Broncos) along with CEO's, Brian Fletcher (Panthers), Blake Solly (Souths) and Don Furner (Raiders) to meet directly with Vlandys.

Vlandys and Abdo head to England next week for the World Cup and the clubs are desperate to have the CBA finalised before they leave.

there is reportedly a $20 million per year shortfall in talks between the RLPA and the NRL. the NRL are reluctant to add that $20 million, because it would affect their own operating expenses.

talks have been on-going since February, while the current CBA expired on October 31

key issues still to be resolved include:
  • NRL salary cap
  • investment in the NRLW
  • NRL player payments
  • revenue share
  • minimum wage for players
  • funding for medical and hardship support for retired and past players.

One source close to the clubs said:

“We’ve gone as far as we can with Andrew; somebody has to get to Peter. The clubs think Andrew can’t do anymore with the finances unless Peter intervenes.”


Panthers CEO, Brian Fletcher says:

“We have budgets to complete and players to sign so we need this to be done ASAP,”

“We seem to be miles apart at the moment.

“You’d think it was a matter that needed a bit of urgency but it doesn’t seem to be getting that. It would be nice to know where we’re going.”


Canberra CEO Don Furner says:

“November 1, the first day of our new financial year, was Tuesday and we’re hoping to get this settled and have clarity on the salary cap and our finances.”


One out-of-Sydney CEO said:

“We have a meeting (on Thursday) with all the clubs to try and move it forward. The NRL has basically gone into ‘ignore-mode.’

“Everyone is getting frustrated by the lack of action from the NRL. Tuesday was the first day of a new financial year and there’s no CBA or club distribution agreement.

“If we have to go to the commission directly, and bypass Andrew, to take this seriously then we will. The clubs are now looking at escalating their concerns to the commissioners.”
 
I’m sure Abdo will have some useless unrelated data ready to go. Incompetence all round at NRL HQ.

Vlandys is unfortunately untouchable because of his three week head start a few years back, Abdo though might get the flick. If he does though, Vlandys will just replace him with another yes man.

I'm all for the idea of doing more in the pre season. They could even give 1 competition point to the winner of the preseason tournament to make it competitive.

I think it's a waste they don't commercialise the trial matches.

it will be interesting to see how the ESL champion goes against the NRL teams.

I do wonder if they'll make it similar to the 9's and force teams to play a certain amount of their highest paid players.

the one thing i do worry about is that there's more chance of injuries in an already long tough season

They will probably go ok, they will treat it like an international or something. Depends on the quality of the squads each team bothers sending because if star players get a season ending injury there are gonna be some pissed off coaches. If the prize money is enough I’m sure the clubs that could use some extra dosh and take it seriously though.
