CROSS FORUM NRL Grand Final Discussion

With the Panthers domination over the past 5 years, does this re-open the discussion for the NRL to introduce a draft system?

The main reason the Panthers have dominated is because the NRL want clubs to develop players. With certain teams just buying established talent, there has been very little incentive to develop, and the NRL is (rightly) shit scared that there isn't going to be enough talent to spread over 20 teams.

So now they get to hold up the Panthers as a beacon of how to succeed, even with a salary cap. Develop enough players and you can have an endless production line. When someone leaves, just plug another one in!

This of course flies in the face of a draft, which seeks to spread the talent evenly and allow struggling clubs to pick up upcoming talent.

Well seeing as Qld is now an AFL state maybe Petey will want to fight back and make Qld great again ?
The western suburbs of Sydney are now known as a rugby league nursery . They should be OK to let slide for 5 years ? While rugby league is resurrected in Qld .
Or am I dreaming ?

Oh by the way did you know Hamiso was a top AFL prospect before switching over to league ?

How about stop having dumb ass people involved in running clubs and recruitment. You don't need a draft you just need smarter people in the game running these clubs. Get smart people in your club and stick to a plan. Can see it with the Bulldogs already. They have changed their junior pathways and they are starting to get the rewards. Their juniors were absolute shit for years. I would like the league to bring in some compensation for developed juniors at a salary cap level but vlandys and co are too worried about fucking png atm. Something that is not even close or should be even on the radar but $$$$$ and China... Imagine that plonker trying to work out a complicated system like a draft.

The best thing that could ever happen to this competition is for players salaries to actually made public so we can see how many dumb clubs we really have. You would be surprised at some of these contracts. Need more turnover at board, administrations and recruitment level. Too many of the same people getting these jobs. It would actually help the majority of players too in contract negotiations but they are as dumb as rocks and think the "extra hate" they get on social media for underperforming is going to be too much. Pretty simple to fix that too.

Shining example in the last week. RCG to the Titans on a 3 year deal. A team that has an abundance of very good forwards most of them young or in their prime. Some of the people running these clubs are numpties.

If we get a draft or even if we don't get a draft, can we have rules, where board members can only be on the board of a club for maximum of 8 years. (just like in America, a person can only be the president for 8 years all up)

Yeah , that`s called democracy .
PTY LTD `s are not a democracy .

Where are you getting that he won't be ready for preseason? He should be. Who are these forwards you are talking about? Erin Clark the only one I can think off. Liu wouldnt make a qld cup team atm. They don't need any more forwards. They need to be spending that money on an actual good half or hooker.

Maybe ready for preseason .
I would be surprised if he can come back when the season starts at 100 %.
ACL usually takes at least a year or more before they can get back to the form they had before the injury . And often they get hamstring problems because the muscles in the leg atrophy .

I don't necessarily think signing another prop forward is a bad idea. The Gold Coast have always struggled with the physical side of the game so bringing in an experienced rugged option would surely bolster them and allow them to play Des' style of game.

I just don't think Reagan Campbell-Gillard on a three year deal is the right choice. He's not the most mobile option and while he has a big hit in him, he's largely known for his carries up the middle which the Gold Coast don't have issues with.

It also remains to be seen how they'll be able to replace Liu and Clark who were effective at laying a platform. While he was getting on, Liu was still the best link player in their forward pack and nobody had a better play the ball than Clark.

If they went ahead and signed James Fisher-Harris for example, I'd say it was a great signing and exactly the type of player they needed. RCG? I didn't want him here and I think anything over a 1 year veteran contract is asking for trouble.

It's just one of several that leaves me scratching my head. I enjoy watching him play, but I don't get the logic in signing AJ Brimson until 2030. The Titans had to make a tough decision there and needed to consider AJ's injury history before commiting long term. Besides, who were they competing with? Why make such a long term commitment?

On the bright side, I'm looking forward to the Carter Gordon experiment. It's all well and good to say 'sign a half! sign a hooker!' but it's not like you can go out and sign Nathan Cleary. If the Gold Coast play this right, they could very well have a quality halves combo in Gordon/Harrison by 2026.
