With the Panthers domination over the past 5 years, does this re-open the discussion for the NRL to introduce a draft system?
The main reason the Panthers have dominated is because the NRL want clubs to develop players. With certain teams just buying established talent, there has been very little incentive to develop, and the NRL is (rightly) shit scared that there isn't going to be enough talent to spread over 20 teams.
So now they get to hold up the Panthers as a beacon of how to succeed, even with a salary cap. Develop enough players and you can have an endless production line. When someone leaves, just plug another one in!
This of course flies in the face of a draft, which seeks to spread the talent evenly and allow struggling clubs to pick up upcoming talent.
