NRL Player Movements & Rumours

What happens if a player has a long term injury while on loan? Does the parent club receive compensation and or salary cap dispensation? What's in it for loser clubs to give better teams their best players? Hell, the players might even realize how shit their parent club is and want out when they return?

Struggling to see any positives to it.

basically it tough shit.

because there not actually loans (there is no such thing in the NRL). the player in question needs to be released from his current contract, to sign with his new club. then sign a brand new contract to go back to his current club

Was this the case with Harry Grant? Signing multiple contracts?

yeah and Jesse Arthars for us.

In Arthars case he was released from his 2022 contract, signing a 2022 contract with the Warriors (at the same time signing a new 2023 Broncos contract (1 year, as 2023 was his last remaining contracted year))

same for Grant when he want to the Tigers (and Momorovski to the Storm)

Oh dude, it is so sweet that you think the NRL would have thought this through.

Marty Taupau has reportedly requested a release from Manly to join the Eels (before Aug 1).

he's uncontracted for next year currently

Wouldn't it just be the club he moves to pays the contract price for the given term(or a percentage), I mean that's how it works in Soccer.

Any injuries sustained isn't the club that is receiving the loaned player's issue but they will have to pay the loan deal while he isn't playing unless it was agreed they wont.

Also what is done in Soccer is if it's a good player they are loaning out they tend to go full price of contract plus a monthly fee on top(so say in our case with Tesi Niu for next year, which could happen), if we deem the player is going to add quality to their team and be a threat we not only want them paying the contract but giving us compensation for giving them a good player.

while it gets reported as a loan, there is no such thing in rugby league, so it doesn't work the same way as European soccer.

in rugby league (at least in the NRL), a player needs to be released from his current contract to play for another club. in the terms of these "loans" he the signs a new deal to go back to his former club

In the English game for example, they use the loan system a lot differently than in the NRL because they have a competition with 92 teams. There isnt just one type of loan. Some clubs have development loans where they loan out young players, for free a lot of the time if its to a lower league club ( similar to feeder clubs here i guess ), to get them experience of first team football. Then you might get a club who loans out a player who isnt in the managers plans to put them in the shop window. Some clubs loan a player for 12 months with a mandatory transfer clause to buy to circumvent FFP. Then they also have loan moves like you mentioned. They just have so many options i dont think we have.

I think the loan system in the NRL needs looking at. It can be a useful tool but i dont think its done right here

To be fair though loaning players to lower tiers is like how it is with NRL and affiliates in QCup and NSWCup, but the lack of transfer fees for players is the big one.

That said with the salary cap system, teams like ours could pay transfer fees for days no issue where as half the sydney clubs are already running on a huge loss so I don't know how the NRL would like it.

Also I'm pretty sure Canberra paid a transfer Fee to get George Williams from the SL, so I guess it's compatible.

Any loan system that allows premiership threat Club to actually improve their roster to a point where it would be salary cap non-compliant if it were to be fielded all year must be rejected

It really is this simple. This is perfect.
