Courier Mail reporting that Bennett has backflipped and Souths are now interested in Laterall Mitchell.

according to the report sources have suggested that "influential connections extremely close to Souths" have offered to pay Mitchell's release fee to his current agent so he can sign with Matt Rose (who has links with Souths)

Surely, if this is true and the release fee is paid by people with close connections to Souths, then that fee would need to be counted under Souths cap (as they wouldn't be offering to pay it for him to sign elsewhere) ...

Like when Mundine paid for Inglis's legal fees?

Latrell to storm maybe?

He's possibly going to be super unfit if he doesn't find a club soon.

It doesn't say he's banned from training. Just that he doesn't need to turn up. If he really wanted to make things awkward he should front up for training.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but does anyone else feel like the Arrow signing at Souths smells a little bit like Bennett's signing of Jack Bird?

Brisbane really wanted/needed a Halfback at the time and clearly had money set aside but missed out on all of them, obviously then had surplus cash, and bit the bullet on Bird even though we didn't overly need him or even really have a spot for him, almost like it was just so we had spent our money on something instead of nothing?

I kinda feel like the Arrow signing is similar. Sure, they could convert him to a Prop or play Murray on an edge, but Murray is the form Lock in the game and Arrow was very much top dollar for a Prop at $800k. It just feels a lot like they came into all this spare money late in the post season and they've bought Arrow just because he's a gun and they wanted to use the money some how, even though they don't overly have a spot for him just like we didn't for Bird?

Yeah agree with this. The Arrow signing makes little sense and is not the kind of player they need. This smacks of Bennett just trying to get the best players again not necessarily the best for the team.

That statement was a more diplomatic way of saying we don't want you here anymore, **** off.

Interesting times for Souffs. So I guess LM goes there this year with the likes of Gagai and Johnson living on borrowed time.

Arrow makes sense for the Rabbitohs. They need some more forwards and he is an absolute workhorse. The loss of the Burgess bros cant be understated enough to that forward pack. I cant see another club willing to fork out for Johnson or Gagai on their current deals. They are just wingers on big wages.

They need props. Arrow isn't one.

He could play there, but that's not his best position. His best position is lock and they already have a gun lock. They could play Murray on an edge and put Arrow at lock but that still doesn't solve their problem.

So they are either going to pay 800k and play him at lock. Or they are going to pay 800k to play him at prop and not get the best out of him. It'll be like when Broncos tried playing Parker at prop, it just didn't work out.

If you're going to pay 800k for a player, you play them in their best position where you're going to get the best out of them. This signing doesn't make much sense.

Is there much difference between the lock role and prop these days? Locks just play longer minutes in the middle than props.

Prop may not be his best position but he's still a gun there and the only thing that'll stop him is injury. They replaced Burgess with Arrow, I think it's a good signing for them.

You destroyed your own point. The Burgess Bro’s a props, damaging ones at that. They needed impact props and bought a workhouse.

It depends on the team. There are lock-props like Gallen, there are lock-locks like Murray. Some try to differentiate the "lock-props" by the order they take runs in, but that doesn't always apply either, as we've seen someone like Lodge take as many 4th tackle runs last season as McGuire used to at lock.

Sam was a workhorse lock. Out of who was available, they did pretty well to land Arrow how they did. There aren't too many impact props in the comp yet alone any up for grabs currently.

Whether or not there was what they needed available or not doesn’t change they fact that he isn’t what they needed. It is the same as the Jack Bird situation. We desperately needed a halfback yet there were none available so we signed Bird with that cash. Would we had been better to hold onto the cap space and see what happened later in the preseason or even the finally season? IMO yes, Bennett obviously likes his luxury buys though.
